HomeMy WebLinkAbout65-023RESOLUTION 65-23 ORDERING THAT A PROPOSITION BE SUBMITTED TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY AT THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION TO BE CALLED AND TO BE HELD ON APRIL 6, 1965, TO AMEND SECTION 402 OF THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA TO INCREASE THE SALARY OF THE COUNCI~4EN AND OF THE i~AYOR WHEREAS, the size of the City of Santa Aha has considerably increased and the problems confronting the City Government have become more numerous and more complex with each passing month, so that the demands upon the time of the members of the City Council and the requirements of attendance at meetings of various sorts have nearly doubled in the past two years, requiring expenditures for transportation and for other things which must be paid by the Council members so that the existing salary of $125.00 per month is no longer adequate, sufficient, or, in fact, any compensation for the services now rendered by Councilmen; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council, on its own motion, hereby authorizes and directs that a proposition be submitted to the electors of the City proposing amendment of Section 402 of the Charter of the City of Santa Ana to provide a monthly compensation of each member of the City Council of $200.00 and the member elected by the City Council as Mayor to receive an additional amount of $100.00 each month, and that said Section be amended so that the same will read as follows: "SECTION 402. CITY COUNCIL: COMPENSATION OF M~BERS. Each member of the City Council shall receive as compensa- tion for his services as such a monthly salary in the sum of TWO Hundred Dollars ($ 200.00 ). %~e member elected by the City Council to fill the office of Mayor shall receive the additional amount of One Hundred Dollars ($ 100.00 .) for each month said member shall fill the office of Mayor. Further, each member of the City Council shall receive reimbursement for required tragel and other expenses while on official business of the City as authorized and approved by the City Council. Absence of a member of the City Council from all regular and special meetings of the City Council during any calendar month shall render him ineligible to receive the monthly salary for such a calendar month unless by permission of the City Council expressed in its official minutes." BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the proposition to be upon the ballot for submission to the electors of the City words and figures as follows: placed be in the Shall the Charter of the City of Santa Ana: be amended by amending Section 402 thereof : to provide that each member of the City : Council shall receive $200.00 each month : as compensation for his services and the : member elected by the City Council to fill : the office of Mayor shall receive an : additional amount each month of $100.00 ? : YES : : NO : : : : The Clerk of the Council is hereby directed to print the proposed amendment to the Charter of the City of Santa Ana once in a newspaper of general circulation in the City, and in all the editions thereof issued during the day of publication, not less than 40 days nor more than 60 days before said election; to publish notice inviting arguments against said proposition; to cause said amendment to be printed together with arguments for and against said proposition, and cause a copy thereof, enclosed in an envelope with sample ballot, to be mailed to each voter; to publish a notice of "Measure to be Voted On" and to publish notice that a copy of said proposed amendment may be had by registered electors on application therefor, all as required by law.
