SMEDLEY AND EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE SCATT~-RED GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD THAT HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY THIS GREAT MAN WHEREAS, DR. RALPH C. SMEDLEY, as Secretary of the Santa Ana YMCA, started a public speaking group of young men in 1924 to keep them off the streets and to improve their ability to express themselves, which group prospered and grew so that the following year DR. SMEDLEY started a second group in the City of Anaheim; and WHEREAS, his able leadership and the central validity of the organizational idea were so good that Toastmasters grew rapidly so that by 1938 there were one hundred individual clubs; and WHEREAS, after World War II the growth of Toastmasters continually amazed DR. SMRDLEY, it became Toastmasters International and spread throughout the world as an organization conceived by this great man and dedicated to "Better Listening, Thinking, Speaking", so that today there are more than 3,500 groups throughout the free world, and community, business, political, and industrial leaders have been and are increasingly being trained in the important art of communication, the use of man's greatest invention, language; and WHEREAS, DR. SMEDLEY was granted a full life, he had the privilege of contributing an organizational idea that has benefited and is benefiting people in nearly every part of the free world, which has grown into Toastmasters International, now headquartered in Santa Ana, California, and thereby created his own enduring monummnt of public and individual service. NOW, THEREFORE, BITIT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City of Santa Ana expresses for the City, the citizens of the City, the United States of America, and those people throughout the free world who have been influenced by the Toastmasters organization, their complete respect, appreciation, and thanks to DR. RALPH C. SMEDLEY for having been a part of our life and a growing beneficial influence wherever men are free to express their ideas. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana at its regular meeting held on the 20th day of September, 1965. .
