TOPIC: Resolution Supporting Postage Stamp for Muhammad Ali
AGENDA TITLE:
Resolution Urging the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee of the United States Postal
Service to Issue a Muhammad Ali Postage Stamp
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Consider one of the following options:
1. Adopt a resolution concerning issuance of Muhammad Ali postage stamp.
2. Provide further direction to staff.
DISCUSSION
The United States Postal Services honors extraordinary individuals who have contributed
to American society, history, culture or environment through the issuance of
commemorative postage stamps.
Muhammad Ali contributed to American society, history, and culture as a renowned figure
in transcending sports, civil rights, peace, activism, freedom, faith, global influence and
humanitarianism. The City Council wishes to support the issuance of a commemorative
U.S. postage stamp in Muhammad Ali’s honor.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA ANA IN SUPPORT OF A COMMEMORATIVE U.S.
POSTAGE STAMP IN HONOR OF MUHAMMAD ALI
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service honors extraordinary individuals who
have contributed to American society, history, culture, or environment through the
issuance of commemorative postage stamps; and
WHEREAS, the stamp program was created to commemorate positive
contributions to American life, history, and culture; and
WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali clearly has contributed to American society, history,
AND culture as a singular and renowned figure in and transcending sports, civil rights,
peace, activism, freedom of thought and faith, global influence, and humanitarianism; and
WHEREAS, as an athlete, Ali was the 1960 Olympic light heavyweight boxing gold
medalist, three-time heavyweight champion of the world, and Sports Illustrated Athlete of
the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, as a humanitarian, Ali fought against injustices for many
disadvantaged groups of all backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, as a world figure, Ali utilized his fame and influence to promote social
change for the improvement of lives of all people; and
WHEREAS, as a thinker and a doer, Ali promoted confidence, dedication, respect
and love for all people; and
WHEREAS, as a role model Ali left us with lessons that packed pathos, humor and
truth, such as "A man who has no imagination has no wings," and "He who is not
courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life," and "I wish people would
love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world," and "You lose
nothing when fighting for a cause," and "My principles are more important than the money
or my title"; and
WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali also once said "I should be a postage stamp. That's
the only way I'll ever get licked."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Santa
Ana as follows:
Section 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Ana hereby finds and declares
its support for and urges the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee of the U.S. Postal
Service to approve the issuance of a commemorative U.S. postage stamp honoring the
life and legacy of Muhammad Ali.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption by
the City Council, and the Clerk of the Council shall attest to and certify the vote adopting
this Resolution
