SuoiLL_i: t_i i i COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM #17 — IN SUPPORT OF THRIVE SANTA ANA,
WALNUT AND DAISY MICRO-FARM PROJECT
Dear Mayor and City Council,
Please consider this letter in support of THRIVE Santa Ana Community Land Trust, the Walnut and Daisy
Micro-Farm, as part of your Public Hearing, item #17 on today's City Council Meeting agenda.
Ardurra had the privilege to be a part of the design team for this very important and beneficial community
project. This project was a great example of what can be accomplished when the community and the City of
Santa Ana have aligned goals to support a community project such as "La Colmena".
On a personal note, having been born and raised in Santa Ana, it was great to see, and be a part of such a
unique project as "La Colmena" and to see the project come to fruition. A project such as this will foster the
sense of community for the area, beautify the area, and provide opportunity for local businesses.
The Walnut and Daisy Micro-Farm is the first community land trust project in the City of Santa Ana, and it
embodies the City's commitment to economic development in the interest of local residents. "La Colmena," as
the site was recently rebranded, will provide affordable commercial space for local, worker-owned
businesses (cooperatives), for arts, and for community events and local markets. The project, awarded by the
State of California's "Jobs First" initiative, has already created over 35 prevailing wage construction jobs, 3
affordable commercial spaces, healthy, organic produce, and community event space.
The development of a community land trust in Santa Ana will also benefit the City's housing goals as stated in
the City's Housing Element Program 34.H, and will overall contribute to economic wellbeing in the city. Thank
you to the City of Santa Ana for supporting this exemplary project and others like it.
Sincerely,
(: --/—.

RE: City Council Agenda Item #17— In support of THRIVE Santa Ana, Walnut and Daisy
Micro-Farm Project
Dear Mayor and City Council,
Please consider this letter in support of THRIVE Santa Ana Community Land Trust, the Walnut
and Daisy Micro-Farm, as part of your Public Hearing, item #17 on today's City Council Meeting
agenda.
This anecdote is from the structural engineer on this project— Erik Sanchez (SAUSD graduate,
born/raised & homeowner in Santa Ana). THRIVE's project has taught us that welding re-
purposed shipping containers together can create stronger structure; that the footing under each
corner of each container shall not block the path of plumbing lines. These lessons learned were
taught to Valley High School students who are part of the after-school architecture construction
and engineering (A.C.E.) program when they visited the construction site on a field trip. These
students are interested in construction trades and design. Students also learned about
community land trusts; a concept their A.C.E. LA/OC organization is seeing the rising popularity
of. So much so, that they've made CLTs the focus of this year's all-schools design competition.
CLTs are the future of LA/OC communities.
Projects like these trickle-down work and learning to Santa Ana residents- from engineers to
organizers to vendors to artists to the youth. This project has also allowed us to channel
creativity in community mural painting the shipping container walls.
KPFF wants to thank the City of Santa Ana for supporting this exemplary project and others like
it.
Sincerely,
Erik Sanchez, Structural Engineer

Dear Mayor and City Council,
Please consider this letter in support of THRIVE Santa Ana Community Land Trust, the Walnut
and Daisy Micro-Farm, as part of your Public Hearing, item #17 on today's City Council Meeting
agenda.
Cooperacion Santa Ana envisions a strong, locally owned shared economy where products
and services are created with dignity and respect for the people who work on them and the
planet that sustains us. We believe that worker cooperatives offer an asset-building opportunity
for those who may not be eligible for employment or lack access to capital, and that the deep
democracy embedded in cooperatives transforms entire communities and local economies. We
offer training, coaching, and incubation, and organize a cooperative network and fund governed
by Orange County cooperatives. Since 2019, approximately 70 individuals have successfully
completed our 12 week training curriculum called "CooperAccion" and of that, 15 new
cooperative businesses or worker self-directed projects were started with 6 co-ops officially
joining La Red de Cooperativas de OC.
To this extent, we have been project partners with THRIVE in developing the Walnut and Daisy
Micro-Farm which will include two cooperatively owned and operated businesses at the site: a
cooperative urban farm and a cooperative cafe called La Milpa Cafe. Post-construction
completion, not only will 10 new jobs be created by the business endeavors at the site, but 10
business owners will receive our support and further training to ensure long-lasting stability and
ownership of livelihoods for these long-term Santa Ana residents as owner-workers of the co-op
businesses at the site.
