FORMATION COMMISSION TO APPROVE THE ANNEXATION
OF THE MARINE CORPS AIR STATION AREA TO THE
CITY OF SANTA ANA
WHEREAS, the Marine Corps Air Station, Santa Ana, being
immediately adjacent to the easterly boundary of the City of
Santa Ana, has been for 25 years or more closely identified as
a military facility associated with our City; and
W}{EREAS, the Marine Corps Air Station, Santa Ana, has for
many years provided a large economic support for businesses in
our City and at the present time provides millions of dollars
per year to our economy; and
WHEREAS, the association of the Marine Corps Air Station
with the City of Santa Ana through the years has given us
nationwide prestige; and
W~EREAS, the Air Station is the primary military training
location for helicopter personnel for the United States Marine
Corps and as such constitutes a continuing critically necessary
training facility for the safety of the entire nation; and
WHEREAS, in 1967 the City of Tustin permitted the construc-
tion of medium density apartment houses which eliminated use of
one of the last two air approach corridors to said facility; and
WHEREAS, the recent filing by a major private property owner
adjoining the northerly boundary of the Marine Corps Air Station
would force the closing of the sole remaining air approach corridor
through the rezoning and development of this land to apartment
house development with medium densities; and
WHEREAS, recent statements attributed to high officials in
the private corporation owning this land under the remaining
approach pattern indicate the purpose of the company is to
eliminate the Air Station or to cause a cessation of its use; and
WHEREAS, the closure of this remaining aircraft approach
pattern would effectively destroy the utilization of the Marine
Corps Air Station for its original training mission; and
WHEREAS, any attempt to relocate and duplicate the facilities
now in use at the Station would constitute an expenditure of over
$200,000,000 by the United States Government; and
WHEREAS, annexation of the Air Station by the City of Santa
Ana is the only means by which the City can effectively exercise
its desire and intent to assist in every way in the preservation
of the Air Station and in exercising any influence upon the method
of development of the adjoining properties so as to permit the
continued utilization of the Station;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City of Santa Ana
does hereby request the Local Agency Formation Commission to approve
the annexation of the Marine Corps Air Station to the City of Santa
ana.
