A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA
URGING A NO VOTE ON PROPOSITION 17 BY ALL CITIZENS OF THE
STATE OF CALIFORNIA
WHEREAS, the passage of Proposition 17 on the November 5, 197~ ballot
will stop construction of the New Melones Reservoir Project on the Stanislaus
River, and;
WHEREAS, the New Melones D~mwill prevent flooding on the lower Stanlslaus
River that has historically resulted in d~age of $1,900,000 annually and the
project will conserve 225,000 acre feet of water annually for municipal,
industrial, and agricultural use with an annual benefit of $3.6 million,
and;
WHEREAS, the project power plant will produce ~30 million kilowatt hours of
hydro-electric power annually which will provide enough power to meet the domestic
needs for a community of 200,000, and;
WHEREAS, the project will allow the development of 55 miles of the lower
Stanislaus River for parks, campgrounds, fishing, and protection of 3500 acres
and the proposed recreational facilities will increase the potential recreational
use from 80,000 to 4,000,000 man days annually, and;
WHEREAS, the New Melones Dam has been approved by the State of California
Department of Water Resources, the United States Bureau of Sports Fisheries and
Wildlife, the California Water Resources Association, the Yokuts Wilderness Group
of the Sierra Club in Modesto, the Mother Lode Chapter of the Sierra Club in
Sacramento and the California Labor Federation AFL-CIO;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City of
Santa Aha urges a NO vote on Proposition 17 by all citizens of the State of California.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City of Santa Ana does
hereby support the City of Modesto in taking this positive position against Propsi-
tion 17.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa Aha at its
regular meeting held on the l~th day of October, 197h.
