HomeMy WebLinkAbout76-055KLG:rs 5-12-76 RESOLUTION NO. 76-55 A REOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA URGING AMEND- MENT TO THE FEDERAL VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1975 TO REDUCE THE COST THEREOF TO LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES WHEREAS, the effect of the Federal Voting Rights Act of 1975 upon the City of Santa Ana and other cities and counties within the State of California is that bilingual voting materials must be mailed to all registered voters, at very substantial ex- pense; and WHEREAS, much of the expenditure therefor is wasteful of public moneys and other public resources, in that the nunkbers of registered voters who require the assistance of bilingual voting materials is very small in proportion to the total nun~ber of registered voters in the city and elsewhere. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana that said Council hereby urges upon the Congress of the United States that the Voting Rights Act of 1975 be amended to permit the mailing of a notice to all registered voters that bilingual voting materials are available in a speci- fied office of the agency that is calling the election, said notice to be in the foreign language or languages applicable to that jurisdiction, and requiring that such bilingual voting materials be available for distribution in said office, but not requiring that they be mailed to all registered voters.
