HomeMy WebLinkAbout77-032GCH: nr 2-15-77 OF SANTA ANA ADOPTING CERTAIN POLICIES,~EC- TIVES AND PRINCIPLES, AS A GUIDE FOR THE NAMING OF PUBLIC PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITIES WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana now owns a number of public parks and recreation facilities which do not have names; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana desires to establish a uniform procedure to name public parks and recreation facili- ties; and WHERE,, certain policies, objectives and principles relating to the naming of public parks and recreation facilities have been proposed; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA A/qA: 1. It shall be the policy of the City of Santa Ana for the Recreation and Park Board of the City of Santa Ana to assume the responsibility for the naming of all public parks and facili- ties within the corporate limits of the City of Santa Ana. The Board shall review all recon~ended names and make their recommen- dation to the City Council for the Council's review and final adoption. 2. The objectives to be carried out in the naming of public parks and recreation facilities in the City of Santa Aha shall be: ae To establish a uniform procedure regarding the naming of existing and future parks and facilities which will assure good taste and community com- patibility. Be To name parks and facilities in such a way that they will be easily identified and complement the area in which they are located. Ce To encourage individuals or groups to perpetuate their names in a useful manner by the dedication of land or funds for public use for a public park or other similar purposes. 3. The principles to be followed in the naming of parks and recreation facilities in the city of Santa Ana shall be: ne When parks or facilities are dedicated to the City of Santa Aha they may be named after individuals or groups who contribute land or funds to that purpose. The name of the park or facility may be held in perpetuity. Be When parks or facilities do not fall into the prior classification then they may be named as follows: Neighborhood parks which are adjacent to schools should be named after the school; for example, Madison School - Madison Park. RESOLUTION NO. 77- 32 PAGE TWO NeighbOrhood .pa~rks~wh~ch are not~adjac~ent to schools may be named: 1) After native or indigenous plants or trees of California. 2) To describe a unique or distinct geographical or environmental location. 3) After a street adjacent to the park. Community parks, regardless of their proximity to schools are to be named after significant leaders and events in the history of Santa Ana, the State of California or the United States of America. Park names within the Orange County area should not be similar to each other in sound or spelling to avoid confusing identification.
