A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA ANA COMMENDING THE SALVATION
ARMY ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR 90TH BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, The Salvation Army, founded in London, England
in 1865 by William Booth, is an international, religious and
charitable organization, based on love for God and love for
Man; and
WHEREAS, today, under the direction of General Arnold
Brown, The Salvation Army serves 81 countries, preaches: in 106
languages and maintains 19,454 religious/charitable centers
and 28 schools for officers' training; and
WHEREAS, in 1887, seven years after George Railton first
brought The Salvation Army to the United States, the City of
Santa Aha became one of the first centers in the Western States;
and
WHEREAS, from the small store front on First Street es-
tablished by Captain and Mrs. Swithewbank,The Salvation Army
was located on Second and Sycamore Streets from 1923 until they
moved to their present modern facility on Edinger in 1970; and
WHEREAS, today, the 500 member congregation enjoys a
modern sanctuary, business and administration building, and a
Christian education building; and
WHEREAS, in 1976 the Youth Community Center, consisting
of a. gymnasium, weight room, game room, handball courts, and
playing fields, was dedicated to enrich the lives of Santa Ana
Youth and their families; and
WHEREAS, the 900 co-ed members of the Youth Community
Center participate in a myriad of activities ranging from an
active sports program to summer camp, for which the 8 to 18
year olds pay a nominal charge of $2.00 annually; and
WHEREAS, The Santa Ana Salvation Army also operates a
Hospitality House which offers 24 hour emergency care; and
WHEREAS, the Family Service
furniture, and counseling services
Ana and Tustin; and
Bureau offers food, clothing,
to the residents of Santa
WHEREAS, The Santa Ana Salvation Army, currently directed
by Captain and Mrs. Alfred R. Van Cleef, affected the lives of
more than 300,000 people through their ministry in 1976;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
the City of Santa Ana expresses for the City, and the citizens
of the City, the gratitude and thanks for the devoted and un-
selfish service to the people of Santa A~a by The Salvation
Army, and calls upon the untold thousands of friends and supporters
to join together in the celebration of the 90th anniversary of
the founding of The Santa Aha Salvation Army.
