HomeMy WebLinkAbout78-094 RESOLUTION NO. 78-94 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA PROCLAIMING JULY 17, 1978 AS "DOUGLAS CORRIGAN DAY" IN THE CITY OF SANTA ANA WHEREAS, on July 16, 1938 DOUGLAS CORRIGAN completed a flight from Long Beach to New York in less than 28 hours, setting a new nonstop transcontinental speed record; and WHEREAS, on July 17, 1938 Corrigan's Ancient Curtis Robin J-6 monoplane left New York's Floyd Bennett Airfield in heavy fog for his return trip to the west coast; and WHEREAS, DOUGLAS CORRIGAN flew through the inpenetrable fog for 24 hours, convinced that he was California-bound; and WHEREAS, emerging from the murk, Doug found that he had "accidentally" flown to Dublin, Ireland, because of the fog, a faulty compass, and the lack of radio; and WHEREAS, his flight provided mirth and excitement during some of the dreariest years of the nation's history; and WHEREAS, DOUGLAS CORRIGAN has honored Santa Ana as a world- renowned resident for many years; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City of Santa Ana, upon the 40th Anniversary o~f the historic flight, does hereby proclaim July 17th, 1978 as: "DOUGLAS CORRIGAN DAY" in the City of Santa Ana and calls upon all his friends nationwide to join in this celebration. ADOPTED this 17th day of July, 1978, by the following vote: AYES: COUNCILMEN: Garthe, Brandt, Bricken, Ortiz, Yamamoto, Evans, Ward NOES: COUNCILMEN: None ABSENT: COUNCILMEN: None ATTEST: CLERK OF THE COUNCIL MAYOR APPROVED AS TO FORM: KEITH L.
