HomeMy WebLinkAbout81-030RESOLUTION NO. 81-50 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF SANTA ANA AUTHORIZING CITY SUPPORT OF SENATE BILL 65 WHICH WOULD EXEMPT EMERGENCY VEHICLES FROM CURRENT STATE EMISSION STANDARDS WHEREAS, existing State law prohibits any motor vehicle from operating on a highway in the State which is not equipped with pollution control devices specified by law; and WHEREAS, emergency vehicles amount to 25,000 of the 18.8 million vehicles currently registered in California (.0013 or 13/100 of one percent); and WHEREAS, acceleration and top speed capabilities are important to law enforcement units and other emergency vehicles, and State emission requirements tend to reduce this capability; and WHEREAS, the Fire Depatment is limited in the types of engines and compatible apparatus it can purchase given current emission standards, and compatible pumps per- form at less than maximum efficiency; and WHEREAS, current emission standards cause in- creased fuel consumption, increased maintenance, and reduced flexibility in purchasing equipment to meet community needs. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL: 1. That the City of Santa Ana supports the adop- tion of Senate Bill 65 which would add a section to the California Vehicle Code to exempt authorized emergency ve- hicles from requirements of California law for motor vehicle pollution control devices. 2. That the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward copies of this Resolution to all Orange County cities and all Orange County State legislators.
