HomeMy WebLinkAbout88-005067 RESOLUTION NO. 88-5 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA TO ENCOURAGE CONTAINER LABELING OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND POINT-OF-PURCHASE WARNING SIGNS. WHEREAS, over a decade of research has indicated that alcohol consumption during pregnancy produces birth defects and many people are still unaware of this fact and some women continue to drink during pregnancy in ignorance that it may harm an unborn child; and, WHEREAS, risk of alcohol-related birth defects begins at conception, long before most women receive medical advice on their pregnancy and for this reason, it is important for the public to know that drinking any alcoholic beverage may cause birth defects; and, WHEREAS, In 1981, the U.S. Surgeon General advised pregnant women and those considering pregnancy to avoid alcoholic beverages, as there is no known safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy; and, WHEREAS, in October 1987, alcohol was included on the Governor's toxic substance list as causing birth defects; and, WHEREAS, other cities and counties throughout the state have adopted ordinances which require a warning sign be posted wherever alcoholic beverages are sold or dispensed. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Santa Ana supports container labeling of alcoholic beverages as the primary warning method of the effects of alcohol consumption on unborn children, 069 Resolution No. 88-5 Page two AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Santa Ana also supports signs. that the City Council of point-of-purchase warning ADOPTED ATTEST: this 19th day of January, 1988.
