RESOLUTION NO. 2000-057
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA ANA SUPPORTING SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL
DISTRICT'S REQUEST FOR 75 ACRES OF THE TUSTIN
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FOR NEW PUBLIC
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
WHEREAS, Santa Ana Unified School District is the largest school district in
Orange County, and the sixth largest in California, with an enrollment of 59,000 students;
and
WHEREAS, approximately 120 acres of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station fall
within Santa Ana Unified School District boundaries; and
WHEREAS, on July 25, 1994, the United States Department of Education
approved Santa Aha Unified School District's application for a public benefit conveyance
of 75 of those 120 acres for classrooms purposes, and forwarded its approval to the
Department of Navy; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Navy has not acted on the Department of
Education's public benefit conveyance request, and the Tustin Base Reuse Plan excludes
the District from any conveyance whatsoever;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the City of Santa Ana supports the public
benefit conveyance request of the Santa Ana Unified School District for 75 acres of the
former Tustin Marine Corps Air Station, which was approved by the United States
Department of Education on July 25, 1994; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Santa Ana respectfully requests that the
Department of Navy and the City of Tustin grant the District's public benefit request and
convey the acres requested to Santa Ana Unified School District; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Santa Ana sincerely desires that the City
of Tustin and the Santa Ana Unified School District reach agreement on the development
of critically needed educational facilities; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Santa Ana strongly urges its federal,
state, and local elected representatives to take all measures necessary and appropriate
to support Santa Ana Unified School District in this worthy endeavor to meet the need for
more classrooms for the children of Orange County's largest school district.
