RECOMMENDED ACTION
Renew the contract with NewsBank, Inc. for a one-year period for on-
line newspaper subscriptions in the amount of $14,845.
DISCUSSION
The Orange County Register has been a source of local news and
information for the past 100 years and is the newspaper of record for
the City of Santa Ana. Current and past issues of the newspaper are
accessible to patrons at all Library sites, and microfilm copies dating
back to 1896 are available at the Central Library. Patrons using the
on-line indexing system are able to enter key words to locate specific
information.
NewsBank, Inc. is the sole source for electronic access to the full
text of the Orange County Register from 1987 to the present with the
capability to search content using key words. The contract allows on-
line access to patrons at the Branch Learning Centers and at other
workstations within the Central Library. In addition, the on-line
product offers access to the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post,
and the Chicago Tribune. Library staff recommends renewal of the
subscription with NewsBank, Inc.
