HomeMy WebLinkAbout25I - TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEM SUP REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION ~ ~ CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: SEPTEMBER 20, 2004 TITLE: APPROVED o As Recommended o As Amended o Ordinance on 151 Reading o Ordinance on 2nd Reading o Implementing Resolution o Set Public Hearing For AGREEMENT FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEM SUPPORT SERVICES /2 CONTINUED TO FILE NUMBER RECOMMENDED ACTION Direct the City Attorney to prepare and authorize the City Manager and the Clerk of the Council to execute an agreement with Ron Garrett to provide citywide traffic signal system support services in an amount not to exceed $70,200. DISCUSSION Currently, the Public Works Agency's Traffic Engineering section has three vacancies. The latest vacancy occurred when the most experienced traffic systems employee retired on July 30, 2004. This employee was responsible of managing the citywide traffic signal system. Although the recruitment for this position is underway, it will take approximately four to five months to fill the position. Also, training for the new hire may take up to six months before the citywide signal system can be operated independently. Under the circumstances, there is an urgent need in the interim for a part-time contractor who can manage the citywide traffic signal system properly. Ron Garrett is a retired employee from the City of Newport Beach with twenty-two years experience in operating a signal system similar to Santa Ana's. The contract employee will work up to thirty hours a week at a competitive rate of $45 per hour. Staff is recommending execution of an agreement with Ron Garrett as a part-time contractor in an amount not to exceed $70,200.
