HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-05-1980 MINUTES OF THE ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA March 5, 1980 The Adjourned Regular Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. by Mayor James E. Ward in Room 831, City Hall, 20 Civic Center Plaza. Council members present were Gordon Bricken, R. W. Luxembourger, J. Ogden Markel, and Mayor Ward. Daniel E. Griset, Alfred C. Serrato, and Harry K. Yamamoto were absent. Also present were City Manager Carl J. Thornton, City Attorney Keith L. Gow, Clerk of the Council Janice C. Guy, Executive Director of Redevelopment and Housing Richard E. Goblirsch, and Director of Public Works John E. Stevens. Representatives of Orange County Transit District (OCTD) present were James P. Reichert, General Manager, and Hil Hornung, Assistant General Manager. Philip L. Anthony, Orange County First District Supervisor; Zika Djokovich, Transportation Advisory Com- mittee member; the public; and a representative of the press were also present. ORANGE COUNTY TRANSIT DISTRICT Mr. Reichert and Mr. Hornung PRESENTATION presented preliminary plans for a rapid transit corridor system v/nich would serve those Orange County areas with higher densities, moving workers and shoppers within the County. It was emphasized that with escalating fuel costs and spiraling inflation, the need, to not only plan but implement such a system, has increased. Reichert further mentioned that a "reasonable" system and "getting started" are essential if future transit needs are to be met. Construction and operations financing, as well as modes, were discussed. Statistics (from a limited sample) were presented which indicated a tendency of the public to favor a monorail system. The OCTD representatives expressed their desire that Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, Irvine and Santa Ana explore the possibility of "sharing" expenses for development of a mass rapid transit system. Mayor Ward expressed his appreciation to the OCTD representatives and thanked all in attendance for participating. CA 112.2 ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m. by unanimous informal consent to March 17, 1980, at 1:00 p.m. for Joint Public Hearings of the Community Redevelopment Agency and City Council.
