David Mitchell, Police Chaplain
Dr. Peter Keller, Director of the Bowers Museum, presented an update on the upcoming
exhibit, "Egyptian Treasures" from the British Museum which opens on October 7, 2000.
He announced that the museum was displaying over 100 objects and that the exhibit
would be at the Bowers Museum until January 2, 2001. He further noted that due to
anticipated heavy attendance at this show, the viewing hours would be extended on
Friday nights until 9:00 p.m.

obtained.

Glen Stroud raised concerns about the impact on parking if the above
amendment application were approved.
Motion: Place ordinance on first reading and authorize publication of title.

90.A. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Sean Mill addressed Council with various concerns; Alex Varga raised
concerns about what he perceived as unequal treatment by City staff, but
noted that he did not keep an appointment with Councilmember Bist
earlier in the day to discuss his specific concerns. Mayor Pulido and
Councilmember Bist asked him to reschedule his appointment.
Margaret Farris addressed concerns she had relative to parking and
zoning. The Mayor suggested that she bring these concerns to the
attention of Planning and Building staff.
Florence Leach made several announcements relative to upcoming
events in Santa Ana, including a candidates forum sponsored by the
Santa Ana Merged Society of Neighbors on October 21, 2000, and the
"Marching through History Exposition" commemorating the 501h
anniversary of the Korean War on November 3-5, 2000, and sponsored
by the County of Orange, the United Veteran Organizations of Orange
County, and the Orange County Veterans Advisory Council. Michael
Macres announced that the Santa Ana Historical Society was conducting
a cemetery Tour at Santa Ana Memorial Park on October 21, 2000.

90.13. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
Councilmember Bist
• Reported that she had attended the National Crime Prevention
Conference in Washington D.C. and was sponsored by the Boys
and Girls Club. She noted that she was able to attend many
workshops, network with other officials from various agencies and
went on a police ride -along
• Suggested that the Cable Television Advisory Board look at
ways to improve the coverage of Council meetings, including
methods of providing the public with more information relative to
Council agenda items and procedures
Mayor Pro Tom Lutz
• Announced that the "Sights and Sounds of Santa Ana" events
held on September 22-24 at the old Masonic Temple (Santa Ana
Performing Arts Center), Bowers Museum, and the Santa Ana
Zoo were very successful and well attended. He further thanked
Ann Andres for her efforts in coordinating the Plein Air Art events,
and Cleve Williams, Executive Director, Parks, Recreation, and
Community Services Agency for acquiring renown jazz and blues
artists for these events.
• Complimented the Mayor on his State of the City address given
last week at the old Masonic Temple and attended by business
and neighborhood leaders
• Requested that the Council adjourn in the memory of Beverly
Nestande, who was active in volunteer groups and noted for her
efforts devoted to the Olive Crest Children's Home
• Announced that the Washington Square Neighborhood
Association Fall Concert would be held on October 7, 2000, and
would feature the jazz and blues group entitled "Simple
Pleasures"
Councilmember McGuivan
• Complimented Los Angeles Times writer David Lansing and artist
Paul Rodriguez for the article in the Times relative to Santa
Ana's Downtown area
• Also requested that the Council adjourn in the memory of Beverly
Nestande, who was very involved with Children in Santa Ana and
Orange County. She announced that their would be a celebration
of Beverly's life at Calvary Church on Tustin Avenue on October
3, 2000
• Reminded residents that the train depot at the Santa Ana Zoo
was opening on October 7, 2000

COMMENTS
Councilmember Christy
• Noted that the downtown Fiesta Patrias event in September was
well attended and very successful
• Asked Manuel Gomez of the City Manager's Office to give an
update on planned events for the Anti -Defamation League's
CHILDREN OF THE DREAM program. Mr. Gomez reported that
during the month of October, four Ethiopian Israeli students will
visit five high schools in the Santa Ana and Long Beach School
Districts to relate their stories of oppression in Ethiopia. The
events are sponsored by the City of Santa Ana, the Orange
County Diversity Forum, chaired by Councilmember Christy, and
the Anti -Defamation League of Orange County/Long Beach. On
October 23rd, a meeting is scheduled at the Police Community
Room, and on October 28, 2000 there will be a reception at the
Bowers Museum
• Presented a poster created by Dezaray Ann Alvarez Gomez, a 6th
grade student who won a contest describing "My Day at the
Center" sponsored by the FaCT Family Resource Centers
• Requested that the Council adjourn in the memory of Kimberly
Foote, daughter of Lt. Mike Foote and his wife Marilyn

• Announced that the 501h anniversary celebration of Memorial Park
was held the previous weekend and was well attended
• Announced that the Orange County Crazies performed at the
Don Cribb Theatre on North Main and encouraged residents to
see this group known for improvisation and comedy
• Congratulated Ron Ono and Cleve Williams of the Parks,
Recreation and Community Services Agency for obtaining a grant
from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for a Wildlife
Sanctuary at Santiago Park
• Noted that parents in the Sandpointe Neighborhood had
requested an update on the status of the proposed new high
school at the Armstrong Ranch property
• Requested that the Council adjourn in the memory of two Santa
Ana pioneers:
Robert Henry "Bob" Newcomb — owner of Newcomb Shoe
Company on 4th Street who was 80 years old and resided
at a Santa Clara Avenue home on property bought by his
grandfather in 1883, and who inherited the shoe company
from his father Fred, and
Rena Melton- originally lived on Van Ness Street, and in
1943 bought 20 acres at a cost of $10,000 in Southwest
Santa Ana for a twenty cow milk farm
