Affordable housing, good jobs, safe schools, clean air, parks and playgrounds, walkablestreets, markets with fresh fruits and vegetables, and strong social networks are also crucial to a healthy California. 3 The Challenge These challenges take many forms –obesity ? and diabetes, unemployment, neighborhood and family violence –threatening economically disadvantaged communities more than others. 4 The Strategy A 10-Year Statewide Commitment to Advance Policies and Forge Partnerships to Build Healthy Communities and a Healthy California. The California Endowment will support the vision of ? parents and local leaders who can imagine a healthy community. We will forge new partnerships and tap the local wisdom of community organizers, school principals, city planners, business executives, hospital and healthcare workers, parents and youth to deliver the essentials of a healthy place to live. 5 The Plan The plan includes building 14 healthy communities • where there is both a need and an opportunity for healthy surroundings. 6 What About the Money? In the early years (2010-2012) of the plan, most of the 14 ? sites can expect grant making in the range of $500,000 to $3 million per site per year. Actual grant support and dollar amounts will be influenced ? by factors such as community size and complexity (population sizes in the various sites range from approximately 30,000 to 90,000), local community capacity and organizational readiness, and elements of each site’s strategic plan. 7 8 10 OUTCOMES All Children Have Health Coverage 1.
