Sister City Establishment
In 2022, the City of Santa Ana entered into a
Sister City agreement with the City of
Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico.
Sahuayo is a municipality of about 80,000
people in northern Michoacán, less than 2
hours south of Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Donation of Surplus Water Equipment
On May 20, 2025, City Council approved
the donation of surplus water equipment to
Sister City, Sahuayo.
This initiative is part of our ongoing
commitment to fostering international
goodwill, collaboration, and humanitarian
support between our two municipalities.

Sister City Mural –Downtown Santa Ana
Sahuayo officials toured the vibrant murals of
Santa Ana which inspired the idea of a joint
Sister City mural to create cultural exchange,
unity, and shared identity between Santa Ana
and Sahuayo.
Santa Ana selected two artists to through the
Arts and Culture Commission that will
collaborate on the mural with two artists from
Sahuayo. Tentative completion is NOV 2025.
A complementary “sister” mural in Sahuayo by
Santa Ana and Sahyayo artists is also
envisioned.

Fiestas Patronales
Sahuayo’s most prominent
celebration each year are the
Fiestas Patronales, honoring
Saint James the Apostle
(Santiago Apóstol), held from
July 16 to August 4.
These festivities include religious
events, parades, traditional
dances, live music, cultural
performances, and street fairs.

Tlahualiles Parade
The Santa Ana delegation experienced the vibrant march featuring thousands of
dancers wearing elaborate wooden masks and ornate costumes. This traditional
event has become a defining cultural symbol of Sahuayo.

Bicentennial Art and History Expo
The Santa Ana delegation attended the recognition ceremony for the winners of the Art and
History Expo: 200 Years of Sahuayo. The expo honored artists whose work celebrates
Sahuayo’s bicentennial anniversary. Notably, one piece highlighted the Sister City
relationship with Santa Ana, incorporating key symbols from both cities.

Economic and Artisan Business Visits
The delegation visited several local businesses and artisans, some which participated in
the 1st Annual Santa Ana–Sahuayo Business Expo earlier this year, including Calzado
Trova, a family-owned leather goods manufacturer, and Sombreros Ávila, a third-
generation hat-making operation. These visits showcased Sahuayo’s entrepreneurial spirit
and skilled craftsmanship.

a new fragrance
business that launched
a commemorative line
for Sahuayo’s
bicentennial
anniversary.

Local Food and Beverage Industry
The delegation toured Beerra’s Brewery, Tequilera Hacienda Sahuayo,
and Panadería Santiago, a multi-generationally owned bakery known for
producing pan dulce sold across Michoacán. These business visits
open opportunities for import and business in Santa Ana.

Historical Site: Catacumbas del
Sagrado Corazón de Jesús
The delegation also visited the famed Catacombs of Sahuayo, located
beneath the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. These catacombs
provided a powerful look into the city’s religious history and the legacy of
those who endured persecution during the Cristero War.
