I strongly oppose the censuring of my councilman Jonathan Hernandez, or any removal of him from
commissions/committees.
This is a disgraceful and nakedly political action because Hernandez dares to represent his constituents and
speak up against the monied interests of the police officers association.
I fully and enthusiastically support councilman Hernandez' public statements condemning police violence and
their corrupting influence in our politics.
I condemn and hold contempt for Valerie, Phil, and David for serving the police union over their working class
constituents simply because the police union funds their political ambitions. I am also concerned with Thai's
influence from this corrupting organization, and hope she will not allow my councilman's voice, and thus his
constituents voices, to be silenced through his censure. Thai would be wise to follow his lead if she wants a
future in politics at all.
I am a lifelong resident of Santa Ana, and will be voting in the upcoming election. The city is watching what
our councilmembers do. I hope they do the right thing and reject censuring councilman Hernandez per item 21.
You will not have my vote if you censure his and my voice.

Mayor Amezcua and City Councilmembers,
I strongly oppose the censure of Councilmember Hernandez. Using censure in response to public criticism risks
undermining free speech and the ability of elected officials to advocate for accountability and transparency.
Elected leaders must be able to raise concerns about city operations, policies, or employee conduct without
fear of retaliation or intimidation. Punitive measures in response to public statements or advocacy set a
dangerous precedent and could chill the very oversight and public accountability that the community depends
on.
Please see attached letter.
Sincerely,
Carlos Perea
Santa Ana Police Oversight Commissioner

Subject: Opposition to Agenda Item #21- Consideration of Possible Censure of Councilmember
Hernandez
Mayor Amezcua and City Councilmembers,
I strongly oppose the censure of Councilmember Hernandez. Using censure in response to
public criticism risks undermining free speech and the ability of elected officials to advocate for
accountability and transparency. Past incidents, including the circulation of a BOLO among
police officers mocking Councilmember Hernandez's late cousin, Brandon Lopez, highlight a
pattern of unprofessional behavior and a disturbing disregard for the dignity of individuals
connected to public officials. This kind of behavior erodes trust in city governance and sends the
wrong message to the community.
Elected leaders must be able to raise concerns about city operations, policies, or employee
conduct without fear of retaliation or intimidation. Punitive measures in response to public
statements or advocacy set a dangerous precedent and could chill the very oversight and public
accountability that the community depends on. It is essential that our governance uphold
principles of transparency, fairness, and respect for all residents, including those connected to
our elected officials.
Thank you for considering these concerns as you deliberate.
Sincerely,
Carlos Perea
Santa Ana Police Oversight Commission
