Re: Item 20— Support for Renaming Cesar Chavez Campesino Park and Related Actions
Dear Mayor Amezcua and Members of the Santa Ana City Council,
On behalf of Chispa,we write to express our strong support for Item 20,which proposes the City of
Santa Ana(City)rename Cesar Chavez to Campesino Park, remove the name and likeness of Cesar
Chavez from City-owned assets, and modifying the City's observance of Cesar Chavez Day.
As an organization rooted in justice, dignity, and accountability,we believe it is critical that the
individuals we uplift in our public spaces reflect the values we stand for. Recent allegations regarding
Cesar Chavez's conduct, including allegations of sexual violence and harm, raise serious concerns that
cannot be ignored. As a community,we must take these matters seriously and ensure that our public
recognitions align with our commitment to supporting survivors.
We also appreciate and support the proposal to rename the observance of Cesar Chavez Day to
Farmworkers Day, or to provide a floating holiday for City employees, as appropriate. This shift
recognizes the collective contributions of farmworkers.
Furthermore,we believe that public spaces, such as parks, murals, and commemorative displays, should
reflect values that unite and uplift our community. For many, continuing to honor an individual accused of
heinous acts causes harm and undermines trust, particularly for survivors of sexual violence and others
impacted by it. We support the City's decision to remove the name and likeness of Cesar Chavez from all
City-owned public assets, including murals, signage, facilities, and commemorative displays.
Santa Ana has long been a city that leads with its values. Supporting this item is an opportunity to
reaffirm our commitment to accountability,to center survivors, and to ensure our public spaces reflect the
principles of dignity and respect for all.
For these reasons,we respectfully urge the City Council to approve Item 20.
Thank you for your leadership and consideration.
Best,
Bulmaro Vicente,
Policy and Political Director
