CASE NAME: OSORIO, BENITO
CLASSIFICATION: OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING (FATAL)
TYPE: AUTOPSY
AGENCY: SANTA ANA POLICE DEPARTMENT
On Friday, March 13, 2015, at approximately 0905 hours, I attended the post mortem
examination of BENITO OSORIO, at the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Office, located at 1071
West Santa Ana Boulevard, in the city of Santa Ana. Prior to the autopsy, I met with all involved
personnel to discuss the circumstances surrounding OSORIO’s death. The following people
attended the meeting and autopsy:
• ETOI DAVENPOT Forensic Pathologist
• JENNIFER JARRETT Orange County Crime Lab Forensic Scientist
• JEANNIE TRAN Orange County Crime Lab Forensic Specialist
• ED ZARAGOZA Detective, Santa Ana Police Department
Following the meeting, the autopsy was conducted by Forensic Pathologist ETOI
DAVENPORT. Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL) Forensic Scientist JENNIFER JARRETT collected
physical evidence while OCCL Forensic Specialist JEANNIE TRAN took digital photographs of the
autopsy. The evidence and photos were documented under FR# 15-43742.
Prior to the autopsy, I observed a white body bag which was sealed with a Coroner’s
identification tag. At approximately 0905 hours, OSORIO’s body was removed from the bag and
I observed the following on the body:
• Orange County Coroner Identification tag on left big toe

• (6) Electrocardiogram (EKG) patches on torso
• (2) Electrocardiogram (EKG) patches on upper thigh (L&R)
• Medical paraphernalia (Needle)-Inserted in right side of chest
• Endotracheal tube
• Interosseous device-Left leg
• Medical wristband-Left wrist
OCCL Forensic Scientist JARRETT collected the following evidence FR# 15-43742:
• (2) Apparent bullets
• Deep muscle tissue
• Biological swab from hands and fingernails
• Multiple bullet fragments and jackets
During the autopsy, DAVENPORT made the following observations:
• An apparent wound was located under the chin that caused a non-fatal contusion to the
brain exiting the left side of the skull
• An apparent bullet entrance wound was located on the left side of the nose. The bullet
appeared to travel at a downward angle exiting at the chin and re-entering in the neck
• An atypical, apparent bullet entrance wound to the right side chest with stippling.
Apparent bullet fragments were located inside the wound that damaged the carotid
artery and would be considered a fatal injury. An apparent bullet was located in the
right side of the back that appeared to originate from this wound
• An atypical, apparent bullet entrance wound to the right side abdomen that “disrupted”
major arteries and would be considered a fatal injury. No bullet was located only
apparent bullet fragments
• An atypical, apparent bullet entrance wound to the lower right groin area. An apparent
bullet and bullet fragments were located inside the wound
• (4) Apparent bullet entrance wounds to the right arm. One of the apparent bullets
appeared to have had contact with something prior to entering the body causing

stippling at the entrance site. An apparent bullet jacket and bullet were recovered from
the arm
• (1) apparent bullet exit wound located on the right arm
Following the autopsy, DAVENPORT concluded that two of the apparent bullet wounds
led to internal injuries that would be considered fatal injuries.
