Narrative:
On Saturday, April 8, 2023, at approximately 00:30 hours, Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) Detective RENE
BONILLA, SAPD Sergeant JORGE LOPEZ and I conducted a digital audio-recorded interview with Registered
Nurse (RN) , regarding the officer-involved shooting (OIS) of MARVIN MELGAREJO involving
SAPD. The interview took place in the fourth floor Medical/Surgical Unit of the Orange County Global Medical
Center (OCGMC), located at 1001 N. Tustin Ave., in Santa Ana.
The following is a summary of the interview, it is not verbatim or necessarily in order of conversation, but organized
for the purpose of clarity. Please refer to the audio-recording for exact quotes, comments and statements.
MIJARES was a properly licensed California RN, who had held an RN Certification for approximately thirteen (9)
years and had been employed by OCGMC for approximately (9) years.
On April 7, 2023, at approximately 21:35 hours, was advised that a patient being treated for multiple
gunshot wounds in the OCGMC Emergency Department would soon be transferred to to her care in the facility's
fourth floor Medical/Surgical Unit. According to Emergency Department personnel, the patient, MARVIN
MELGAREJO, had sustained two (2) gunshot wounds to the left bicep, two (2) gunshot wounds to the upper left
thigh, two (2) gunshot wounds to the upper right thigh and two (2) gunshot wounds to the right calf. In addition,
MELGAREJO was found to have a fracture of his left humerus.
As part of the patient transfer briefing, was further advised regarding the treatments MELGAREJO
received during his time in the Emergency Department, which included Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA)
scans, cleansing/closing of wounds and left arm splinting. Medications administered to MELGAREJO in the
Emergency Department included two (2) grams of Ancef, one (1) milligram of Dilaudid and one milligram of Versed.
MIJARES explained Ancef was an antibiotic and both Dilaudid and Versed were pain relief medications.
At approximately 2200 hours, MELGAREJO was transferred from the Emergency Department to OCGMC Patient
Care Room 420, where upon contact, MIJARES found MELGAREJO to be alert and oriented with stable vital signs.
During ' initial contact with MELGAREJO, he told her he was shot while running.
While in the Medical/Surgical Unit, administered the following medications to MELGAREJO: Intravenous
(IV) fluids, Ancef, Senekot and Norco.
The interview with concluded at approximately 00:40 hours.
A copy of the interview audio-recording was subsequently downloaded into the Orange County District Attorney
