On Sunday, June 23, 2013, at approximately 0840 hours, Orange County District
Attorney Supervising Investigator, MARK GUTIERREZ contacted me regarding an officer involved
shooting incident involving the Santa Ana Police Department. GUTIERREZ requested I respond
to the area of 809 South Townsend Street, in the city of Santa Ana to assist with the
investigation.
I arrived at the incident location at 1013 hours, and met with investigators from the
Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) and from the Santa Ana Police Department
(SAPD) who were there to assist with the investigation.
At approximately 1050 hours, SAPD Sergeant PHIL CRAFT conducted a briefing of the
known circumstances surrounding the incident for the personnel involved in the investigation.
Following the briefing, GUTIERREZ teamed me with SAPD Detective DOMINGO CABRERA
to conduct the processing of the officers involved in the shooting incident.
At approximately 1306 hours, I responded to the Santa Ana Police Department and
witnessed Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL) Forensic Specialist LAURABETH CAMACHO process
the following SAPD personnel:

• Officer SAUL ESQUIVEL
The following items were collected and/or photographed under OCCL FR # 13-48764:
Santa Ana Police Officer GARY AYALA #3294
Officer AYALA’s uniform consisted of a short sleeved, dark blue uniform shirt and long
dark blue pants. The uniform shirt had Santa Ana Police patches affixed to both sleeves below
the shoulder. A metal police badge was affixed above the left shirt pocket and AYALA’s
nameplate was affixed above the right shirt pocket. AYALA wore a complete Sam Browne duty
belt.
AYALA’s duty belt contained the following items:
• Glock, Model 22, .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, right side
• Two additional 15 round capacity semi-automatic pistol magazines, left front
• Motorola hand held radio, left side
• (2) pair handcuffs, left and right rear
• “Silent” key holder, right rear
• Key clip, right front
• Oleoresin Capsicum spray, left rear
• PR-24 baton, left side
AYALA carried a backup handgun in his left rear pants pocket. The backup handgun was
not collected by the OCCL.
The backup handgun and ammunition were described as follows:
• Smith and Wesson, Bodyguard, .380 semi-automatic pistol serial number #EBT-0446.
The handgun magazine was loaded to capacity with six rounds of Hornady .380 auto
ammunition with one round in the chamber of the pistol.

After photographing AYALA, CAMACHO collected the following:
• Glock, Model 22, .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, serial # LXN640 with a Streamlight
TLR light serial # C4-3525650912 mounted on the lower rail
• One magazine from the handgun containing 7 Winchester rounds and 1 additional
round of Winchester ammunition from the chamber of the handgun.
• Two additional handgun magazines each loaded to a maximum capacity with 15 rounds
of Winchester brand ammunition
Santa Ana Police Officer SAUL ESQUIVEL #3295
Officer ESQUIVEL’s uniform consisted of a short sleeved, dark blue uniform shirt and
long dark blue pants. The uniform shirt had Santa Ana Police patches affixed to both sleeves
below the shoulder. A metal police badge was affixed above the left shirt pocket and
ESQUIVEL’s nameplate was affixed above the right shirt pocket. ESQUIVEL wore a complete
Sam Browne duty belt.
ESQUIVEL’s duty belt contained the following items:
• Glock, Model 21, .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, right side
• Two additional 13 round capacity handgun magazines, left front
• Taser, Model X26 serial # X00-660726, left side
• Expandable baton, left rear
• Oleoresin Capsicum spray, left rear
• Handcuffs, right rear
• Motorola hand held radio, left side
After photographing ESQUIVEL, CAMACHO collected the following:
• Glock, Model 21, .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol serial # HAY924 with a Streamlight

• One magazine from the handgun containing 1 Winchester round and 1 additional
Winchester round from the chamber of the handgun

ammunition
