Sunday. June 23. 2013 0830 hours
1 received a phone call from Commander Colon # 1969 who advised me that an officer involved shooting
had occurred. He requested 1 respond to the Santa Ana Police Department to assist with the
investigation.
1022 hours
l arrived at the Santa Ana Police Station and met with the other investigators of the Santa Ana Police
Department Officer Involved Shooting Team. Sgt Esparza # 1568 gave a briefing to the investigators and
informed us that the location of the shooting was 800 S Townsend Street. He designated Detective L.
Rodriguez as the case agent and assigned me with a canvass of the neighborhood .
1045 hours
l arrived on scene at checked in with Ofc. Ribeiro #3224 who was maintaining the crime scene log.
1050 hours
Sergeant Craft #2979 gave a briefing as to the circumstances of the investigation thus far. Also in
attendance were members of the Orange County District Attorney's Office Officer Involved Shooting
Team and Forensic Specialists from the Orange County Sheriffs Department. I was assigned to assist
Orange County District Attorney Investigator Michael Kendrick with a canvass of the neighborhood for
witnesses. Investigator Kendrick and I obtained the following statements.
810 S. Raitt Street: 1110 Hours
Investigator Kendrick and I contacted the residents at 810 S. Raitt Street. This location is a two story
apartment.
Apartment # 10
On Sunday June 23, 2013 ,Zayuri Castillo was awakened by approximately five gunshots. Castillo did
not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Brenda Castillo was awakened by the sound of approximately five gunshots.
Castillo did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 at approximately 0608 hours , Eduardo Lina was in the living room of his
apartment when he heard approximately eight gunshots. Lina did not witness the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Esteher Rivera was sleeping in her living room when she was awakened by
the sound of gunshots. Rivera did not witness the shooting incident.

On Sunday June 23, 2013 Francisco Gutierrez was sleeping in his bedroom when he was awakened by
the sound of approximately five gunshots. Gutierrez did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Veronica Moreno was sleeping in her bedroom when she was awakened by
the sounds of gunshots. Moreno did not witness the shooting.

Apartment #8
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Flora Santana was awakened by by either fireworks or gunshots. Santana did
not witness the shooting. Santana said her husband Nicolas and their son Henry did not wake up during
the shooting.
Apartment #7
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Nasario Silvas was in his bedroom when he heard three gunshots and then
another eight gunshots. Silvas went downstairs and outside toward the west alley and saw two police
officers. Silvas did not witness the shooting.
Alberta Moreno did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Nasario Silvas Jr. was in the living room when he heard approximately eight
gunshots. He did not witness the shooting.
Apartment #6
On Sunday June 23, 2013 at approximately 0800 hours, Anna Cortez was sleeping in her bedroom and
was awakened by the sound of approximately three gunshots and then another five or six gunshots.
Cortez did not witness the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Isabel Antonio was in her apartment when she heard gunshots. Antonio did
not witness the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Pedro Cortez was in his apartment when he heard what sounded like
fireworks. Pedro did not witness the shooting.
Apartment #5
Gerardo Vargas did not hear or witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 at approximately 0815 hours, Jennifer Vargas was in her bedroom when she
heard what sounded like fireworks. She described four fireworks noises followed by a pause and then
another four firework noises. Vargas heard at least two male voices coming from the alley. Vargas
thought she heard one male say "stop" in English. Vargas did not witness the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 between 0800 and 0830 hours, Juan Vargas was awakened by the sound of
approximately eight gunshots. Vargas did not witness the incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 between 0800 and 0810 hours, Rosellina Venegan heard approximately four
gunshots, followed by male voices yelling something in English and then more gunshots. Benegan did
not understand what was said. Venegan did not witness the shooting incident.

On Sunday June 23, 2013 Balbina Quinonez was awakened by several gunshots. Quionez did not
witness the shooting incident.

On Sunday June 23, 2013 Jose Morales, said he was sleeping at the time of the incident. He did not hear
or witness the shooting.

On June 23, 2013 Thomas Rodriguez was awakened by two or three gunshots. Rodriguez did not
witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, Espirdion Diaz was awakened by the sound of gunshots. Diaz looked outside her
window and saw two police officers. Diaz did not witness the shooting incident.

Albert Valenzuela did not witness or hear the shooting incident.
806 S. Raitt Street
Investigator Kendrick and I contacted the residents at 806 S. Raitt Street. This location is a two story
apartment complex.We obtained the following statements.
Apartment #8
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Guadalupe Corona was in her living room with her husband Francisco when
she heard what she thought was fireworks, however because the sound was so rapid she realized they
might have been gunshots. Corona walked outside and heard male voices yelling in English; however
she could not understand what was being said. Corona looked into the west alley and saw what appeared
to be a young boy lying on the ground. Corona heard police sirens as well as police officers arriving in
the west alley. Corona did not witness the shooting incident.
Francisco Corona did not witness the shooting incident.

On June 23, 2013 at approximately 0800 hours, Rual Nava Jr. was awakened by approximately eight
gunshots. Nava did not witness the shooting incident.
On June 23 , 2013 at approximately 0800 hours, Brenda Diaz was awakened by approximately eight
gunshots. Diaz did not witness the shooting incident.
Raul Nava Sr. was not home at the time of the shooting incident.
Apartment #6
On Sunday June 23, 2013 at approximately 0805 hours, Betzabet Aguilar was awakened by six
gunshots, a pause, and then another five gunshots. Aguilar did not witness the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Aliana Aguilar was awakened by approximately eight gunshots, a pause and

another eight gunshots. Aguilar did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Martha Velasquez was walking into her bathroom when she heard
approximately six gunshots coming from the west alley. Velasquez did not witness the shooting
incident.
Jose Aguilar was not home a the time of the shooting incident.

On Sunday June 23, 2013 Oscar Sandoval was awakend by several gunshots. Sandoval did not witness
the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Claudia Bautista was awakened by approximately ten gunshots coming from
the west alley. Bautista did not witness the shooting incident.
Apartment #4
On Sunday June 23, 2013 at approximately 0730 hours, Nesta Oliveras was in the living room of his
apartment when he heard approximately nine gunshots, a pause and then approximately five gunshots.
Oliveras heard male voices coming from the west alley, but could not understand what they were saying.
Oliveras went to the west alley and saw several police officers holding guns. the police officers told
Oliveras to go back inside his apartment. Oliveras did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Diana Oliveras was awakened by what sounded like fireworks or gunshots.
Oliveras heard male voices say in English "put your hands in the air" and "do not move". Oliveras went
downstairs and looked toward the west alley and saw police officers covering objects with paper.
Oliveras saw a garage door with two bullet holes. Oliveras did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Patricia Perez was in her bedroom when she heard four or five gunshots.
Perez did not witness the shooting incident.
Karen Perez did not witness or hear the shooting incident..
Adrian Oliveras did not witness or hear the shooting incident.
Apartment 3
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Gerson Villegas was awakend at approximately 0700 hours by approximately
ten gunshots. Villegas did not witness the shooting incident.
Apartment #2
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Genoveva Ortiz was awakend by approximately seven gunshots. Ortiz did not
witness the shooting incident.
On Thursday July 18, 2013, I spoke to a male on the phone who identified himself as Cesar Gonzalez.
Gonzalez told me he did not witness or hear the shooting.

On Sunday June 23, 2013 Elvia Chavez was awakened by six to eight gunshots. Chavez went to her
vehicle which was parked by the west alley and saw officers. Chavez returned to her apartment . Chavez
did not witness the shooting incident.

Investigator Kendrick and I contacted the residents at 801 S. Townsend Street. We obtained the
following statements.
Apartment# I
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Juan Artega was awakened by approximately sixteen to twenty gunshots.
Artega looked outside toward the east alley and saw the alley being blocked off by the police. Artega did
not witness the shooting.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Jose Artega was awakened by approximately five gunshots. Artega went to
the east alley however the police would not allow him to enter the alley. Artega did not witness the
shooting incident.
Apartment #2
On Sunday June 23, 2013, Daniel Perez was awakened by approximately three or four gunshots from the
east alley. Perez did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 20 I 3 Jose Perez was awakened by approximately three to five gunshots. Perez did
not witness the shooting incident.
Gloria Perez did not witness the shooting incident.
Apartment #3
Alex Pacheco did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Maria Arteaga was awakened by approximately ten to fifteen gunshots
coming from the east alley. Arteaga stayed inside her apartment. Arteaga did not witness the shooting
incident.
Apartment #4
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Martin Moralles was awakened by approximately ten to twenty gunshots.
Moralles thought he heard a male voice say in English "drop the weapon"' however he could not be
certain. Moralles did not witness the shooting incident.
On Sunday June 23, 2013 Diana Lopez was awakend by gunshots. Lopez did not witness the shooting
incident.

Patrol officers contacted an adult female in the east alley of 800 South
Townsend Street. An officer involved shooting occurs and the female was
shot. She was transported to the hospital where she died from her wounds . A
replica firearm was located within the crime scene.

I was contacted at home by Sergeant J. Esparza #1568 of the Santa Ana Police Department Homicide Unit.
He infonned me of an officer involved shooting that had just occurred and request I respond to assist with
the investigation.

l arrived at the location and entered the crime scene. I checked in with Officer R. Ribiero #3224 who was
maintaining a crime scene personnel log.

l was briefed by Sergeant Esparza on the circumstances surrounding the officer involved shooting. The
suspect was a female and transported to the hospital. He requested I respond to U.C.l. Medical Center and
assist Detective J. Launi # l 628 .

I arrived to the emergency room at UCI Medical Center and met with Detective J. Launi and Investigator

K. Degraffenried from the Orange County District Attorney 's Office Special Assignments Unit. l was
infonned by Detective Launi that the female had been pronounced dead and that they were waiting for the
Orange County Coroner's Officer to respond. Detective Launi documented the investigation at UCI
Medical Center. I only observed and did not interview anyone. Refer to Detective Launi's supplemental
report for further details.
