Esquivel #3295 Witness SAPD Page 2 of 2 On Sunday, June 23 , 2013, at 0813 hours, I responded to the alley of 809 South Townsend, in reference to an officer involved shooting that just occurred. The patrol personnel involved were Officers Ayala and Esquivel. Upon arrival, Officer Esquivel immediately advised me that the involved suspect was still armed and the scene needed to be secured, with a particular focus on the involved garage of 809 South Townsend. I quickly gathered a search team and the garage was cleared of any additional suspects, along with securing the involved suspect. Soon there after, I transported Officers Ayala and Esquivel to the station for the investigative process, thus staying with them until the process was completed. I did not contact or speak with any civilian witnesses at the scene. Medics from the Orange County Fire Authority were treating Gonzalez. At the request of Medic Micah McAllister #4594 I removed the handcuffs from Gonzalez's wrists and placed the handcuffs on a marked patrol vehicle next to where Gonzalez was being treated by the medics. While Gonzalez was lying on the ground I observed a folded up monetary bill on her chest . The bill was folded in a shape similar to a triangle . At approximately 0840 hours I followed Care Ambulance #299 as it transported Gonzalez to UCI Medical Center in the city of Orange. I arrived at UC I Medical Center at 0848 hours. Gonzalez was ta.ken to Trauma Room A. Medical staff treated Gonzalez . pronounced Gonzalez deceased at 0855 hours . stated that Gonzalez died from a gunshot wound to the left ventrical. While was present medical staff turned Gonzalez onto her si de and I was able to observ e a tattoo on the middle portion of her upper back that read,. I was also able to observe a tattoo on the right side of Gonzalez's upper back that was a similar to a . The Care Ambulance EMT's were identified as Kevin Sanchez and Scott Carlson . At 0930 hours EMT Sanchez handed me a folded $5 bill that he stated fell off of Gonzalez's person while she was being treated in the ambulance. This bill appeared similar to the bill I saw on Gonza lez 's person while she was lying in the alley. The OCFA Paramedics were identified as Bary i c Hunter #5197 and Micah McAllister #4594 . At approximately 0900 hours Ofc. Morton #1091 from the Orange Police Department arrived at the hospital asking whether or not Gonzalez had been identified and if so , was Gonzal ez a match to a homicide suspect out of the city of Orange . At the time we had not been able to positively identify Gonzalez. Ofc. Morton was able to show me pictures of tattoos that matched the tattoos I observed on Gonzalez's person. I informed Ofc. Morton and Sgt. Amat #1293 from the Orange Police Department that we were unable to make contact with Gonzalez until the Coroner arrived o n scen e. Ofc. Morton and Sgt. Amat cleared the scene . At 0938 hours hospital staff moved Gonzalez from Trauma Room A to DH 12 -bed 16. At 1010 hours D.A. Investigator Kory Degraffenreid arrived at the UCI Medical Center. At 1030 hours Inv. Jeff Launi with the Santa Ana Police Department arrived at UCI Medical Center . At 1204 hours I handed the $5 bindle to Deputy Coroner Beasley . Depu t y Coroner Bea sley unfolded the $5 bill and discovered that it was empty. Deputy Coroner Beasley retained the $5 bill. Person: Unknown Involvement: Suspect Gender/Ethnicity: Female/ Hispanic Description: Physical: Female , 5'05" tall, 110 lbs., long hair, Narrative: On June 23, 2013, at approx. 0807 hours, I monitored a radio broadcast of a 998-Officer Involved Shooting in the area of 800 South Townsend Street. I responded to the area from 400 N . Grand A venue. While driving to the location, one of the officers involved stated that two additional related subjects were in a garage. I arrived from the southern direction at the shooting scene in the east alley of 805 S. The subject, a Hispanic female, was bleeding and appeared to be unre sponsive . A replica pistol was lyi ng on the ground approximately 5 feet from her. I directed the officers to handcuff the subject. I took command of the scene and coordinated a search of 805 S. Townsend garage # 1. The garage was adjacent to were the suspect was laying and the search was in progress when I arrived. I also monitored a search of the carport area between the garages. I deemed the scene secure at 0814 hours. I requested medics respond to the area and to enter from the north side of the alley. While waiting for paramedics to arrive, I identified Officer Ayala #3294 and Esquivel #3295 as being involved in the shooting. With both officers together, I obtained an "officer safety statement" from them. They told me that there were no outstanding suspects and that collectively they had fired 10-12 rounds in a northerly and westerly direction. I then directed Corporal Enriquez to transport the officers to the police stat ion. Orange County Fire Authority Engine #73 responded to the scene and began life saving measures on th e subject. The subject was then transported by Care Ambulance #299 to UCI Hospital. I was later advised that she was pronounced deceased at 0855 hours . A search of the area was conducted to ensure that no other people had been shot. The search located several bullet holes in garage door #0 at 805 S . Townsend. Garage #0 was secured with a lock on the outside. I directed officers to cut the lock and search the garage to ensure there were no injured people inside. A search was conducted and no one was located in the garage. I maintained control of the crime scene and directed officers to secure the scene with crime scene tape. By doing so , an inner and outer perimeters were established which further secured the integrity of the scene. I assigned officers to perimeter positions at the crime scene as well. I also directed officers to do a canvass of the area in order to ensure that no witnesses had been struck by gunfire. Officers contacted citizens in the immediate area and in apartments surrounding the crime scene. I relinquished command of the scene to Sergeant Flynn upon his arrival. I briefed Sergeant Flynn on the circumstances of the incident. Narrative: On Sunday, 6/23/13, at about 1542 hours, I was dispatched to the east alley of 800 S. Townsend St. to assist with perimeter security at an officer-involved shooting (OIS). I arrived on scene at about 1548 hours and was directed by Sgt. P. Craft #2979 to relieve Ofc. M. Delgadillo #2322 at the south, outer perimeter of the alley. I did not make entry into the inner perimeter or into the OIS scene. I made no contact with any witnesses at the scene and did not conduct any interviews. At about 1805 hours, I was directed by Sgt. C. Flynn # 183 7 to break down the crime scene tape of the outer perimeter at the south end of the east alley of 800 S. Townsend. I cleared the scene at about 1805 hours. Ofc. K.
