A RESOLUTION OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SANTA ANA APPROVING THE NAMING OF THE
POLICE COMMUNITY ROOM TO DAN HALE COMIMUNITY
ROOM
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SANTA
ANA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: Pursuant to the ongoing traditions between the City of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana
Police Department, the community room in the Police Department is hereby renamed in honor of
Officer Dan Hale, who was killed in the line of duty.
Section 2: The Planning Commission of the City of Santa Ana does find determine and declares
follows:
a. In the past, the Planning Commission of the City of Santa Ana and the Police
Department have recognized officers killed in the line of duty by naming something of
significance in their memory.
b. Two examples of this tribute occurred when Sasser Park was dedicated in honor
of Officer Nelson Sasser and Boyd Street was named after Range Master Joseph Boyd. Both
officers were killed in the line of duty, and in honor of their memory the City dedicated
something of significance, in their recognition.
c. The Planning commission wishes to bestow this honor upon Officer Dan Hale
who was killed in the line of duty on November 12, 1977.
Section 3: The Planning commission's decision to rename the community room in honor of
Officer Hale is also based on the following facts:
a. Officer Hale was a strong believer in community policing.
b. His prior work experience included serving with the Berkley Police Department
and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police Department.
c. Officer Hale left BART to work in acommunity-policing environment despite the
fact, had risen the rank of sergeant with BART and would start anew with the Santa Ana Police
Department.
d. Officer Hale made certain personal sacrifices when he left the BART Police
Department to join the Santa Ana Police Department on October 7, 1975.

. e. On November 12, 1977, at approximately 8:35 p.m., Officer Hale responded to a
call of a residential burglary in progress on South Western Street. Upon his arrival, Officer Hale
confronted two male suspects inside the residence and was shot and killed.
f. Officer Hale made the ultimate sacrifice for this community and therefore it is the
recommendation of the Santa Ana Police Department that the department's community room be
named in honor and memory of Officer Dan Hale.
ADOPTED this 11 day of September , 2000, by the following vote:
AYES: Commissioners Mondo, Nalle, Verino, and Cribb
NOES: Commissioners None
ABSENT: Commissioners Solorio, Doughty, and Richardson
ABSTENTIONS: Commissioners None
