Renew the contract with Midway City Feed Company for animal food in an amount not to exceed
$70,000.
DISCUSSION
The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park houses 250 animals in its collection. Each of the 88 different
species has special dietary needs. The types of animal food consumed at the Zoo include but not
limited to alfalfa, bale mix, bird seed and additional dietary items. The contract for animal food is
designed to provide quality products at a significant savings based on quantity pricing.
On July 16, 2007, the City Council awarded a contract to Midway City Feed Company for a one-year
period with provision for three, one-year renewals. Over the past fiscal period, the Zoo staff
branched out in search of new feed vendors for different types of grains and seed. The results
cemented Midway City Feed Company as the preferred vendor as it provides the Zoo with enriched
dry feed that keeps our animals healthy and active. The expenditures under the current blanket
order contract are projected to total $35,000 by the end of June 30, 2011 and $35,000 through June
30, 2012. The vendor has performed satisfactorily during the past contract period and has agreed to
renew the contract without an increase in pricing. Staff recommends the final renewal of the
contract.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds are available in the Recreation and Community Services - Santa Ana Zoo account (no.
01113220-63400).
