WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD RECOMMENDATION At its regular meeting on January 15, 2015, by a vote of 14:0 (Davila, De la Riva, De Leon, Edmonds, Elliott, Everett, Fischer, Jimenez -Ham!, Knitter, Lewis, McMurtray, Piwnica, Ruiz, Sanchez), the Workforce Investment Board recommended that the City Council reappoint Ignacio Alegre, Brent Beasley, Patrick Korthuis, Lee McMurtray, Robert Ruiz, Robert Tucker, and Caleb Everett to the Santa Ana Workforce Investment Board for a four -year term. DISCUSSION In compliance with legislation outlined in the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, a Workforce Investment Board (WIB) was created and its members appointed by City Council. The WIB, in partnership with City Council, provides policy guidance for and exercises oversight with respect to activities contained in the Workforce Investment Plan, directs activities to actively solicit public and private support for and participation in Workforce Investment Area programs and provide oversight of the activities to ensure efficient and effective operation. The WIB members are appointed by City Council with members representing various categories as required by law with a majority of the board members representing the private sector. Presently, there are seven board members whose terms expire March 2015 and are being recommended for reappointment for a four -year term. All reappointing members are active and 13A -1 WIB Reappointments February 17, 2015 Page 2 committed to the goals of the City of Santa Ana and WIB. STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT Approval of this item supports the City's efforts to meet Goal #5 Community Health, Livability, Engagement & Sustainability, Objective #1 (establish a comprehensive community engagement initiative to expand access to information and create opportunities for stakeholders to play an active role in discussion public policy and setting priorities). Mr. and Mrs, Korthuis arrived in the USA a few years before Patrick was borax. He considers it a blessing to be able to be raised knowing two different cultures, the Dutch and the American culture. Patrick has an older brother, Edward and a younger sister Xvorme. Patrick was very fortunate to have been able to go to Holland several times during his youth and spend time with his Dutch relatives. The visits to Holland and the influence of his parents gave Patrick the opportunity to learn Dutch. Patrick learned the value of entrepreneurship at the age of nine whorl he acquired his own newspaper route, delivering for the Harold Examiner, and then moved to the Independent Press Telegram. He graduated from Galu- High School in Cerritos. He was accepted at Universal Technical Institute, where he graduated with a Diesel Mechanic degree. He worked as a Mechanic for 18 years before he and his wife decided to venture into having their own business. After some research they bought a Sir Speedy Printing. They have had their business since 1999. In 2006 they were able to purchase a building for the business which allows them to continue to grow. The business has been in Santa Ana since 1974 and at the same location until they recently moved into their new facility at 1540 S. Lyon Street in Santa Ana. Patrick is a member of the Santa Ana Chamber and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and is past President the Santa Ana Kiwanhs club. In his free time Ire enjoys working in the garden. His hobbies are motorcycle riding, water skiing, and snow skiing, His dream would be to one day drive a race car. Patrick has been blessed with three boys, Brandon 19, Jason 18 and Nathaniel 6wks. Brandon is in his second year of college attending LBSU and plans to attend Chiropractic College. Jason is a senior in High School and would like to be an Anesthesiologist. The youngest is Nathaniel and we don't know what lie wants to be because Ire is only 6 weeks old and doing great.
