Subject: 2015 / 2016 Budget Items for South Main Corridor
Dear Honorable, Mayor Pulido, City Manager, David Cavazos, and Honorable, City Council Members,
Martinez, Sarmiento, Benavides, Tinjero, Amezcua, & Reyna,
On behalf of the South Santa Ana Merchants Association, I would like to bring to your attention the urgent
needs of the South Main Corridor. These items that need to be addressed, we would like you to take into
consideration for funds to be allocated for the upcoming budget for the 2015 / 2016 fiscal year. These are
issues that effect the well being of our residents, businesses and tarnish the image of our great city.
Homeless - MHA presents a problem to the businesses on the corridor and surrounding neighborhoods. Where they are a great help to our
homeless population, the problem is that they are only open from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm and after that their clients have no where to go. They
care for people that have very bad mental problems and addictions which in return presents a problem to businesses & families in the area,
such as, leaving trash, doing drugs, camping out, coming into businesses and being disruptive, which drives away customers. MHA is only
leasing the building so they would be willing to move if we could come up with a safer area for them that would make more sense for there
clients.
Clean & Safe Program - In the downtown area you have this program that keeps the streets & sidewalks clean. The most important part is the
security. The South Main Corridor is asking that you extend this program to the South Main Corridor. As you can see graffiti has been down
along with crime. We need this in our area to give a sense of security when we have our customers come in to shop. If the public sees this
security our area will start the revitalization that it needs and more businesses will want to come into the corridor.
Sub Station / Community Center - At one time we had a sub station on the corridor. This is something that is needed for the safety of this
community and also it can be a resource center of what is going on in our city. If anyone is having issues or wants to know about what
businesses there are in the city this could be a great resource. Maybe even have some kind of after school program for the children in the
area.
Traffic - We need an evaluation done on our corridor on what can be done to slow down traffic. We have to many pedestrians on this street
and it is very unsafe. There have been many accidents and deaths in the past years on this corridor. Slowing down traffic will also help
business traffic.
Bid - With getting a bid in place for the corridor it could help with paying the above items. We are asking the city to come up with the
needed money to do the out reach for the bid. The South Main corridor has no resources to come up with the money needed.
I thank you in advance for looking into the needs of the corridor and how we can address the above issues and look forward to your response.
Sincerely
Sharon Barlow
