1. Elect a Chairperson for the Historic Resources Commission for the 2016/17
term.
2. Elect a Vice Chairperson for the Historic Resources Commission for the
2016/17 term.
Chairperson Christy called for nominations for Chairperson. Commissioner Hitterdale
nominated Chairperson Christy as Chairperson and the nomination was accepted.
Hearing no further nominations, the nominations were closed without objection.
MOTION: Elect Alberta Christy as Chairperson for the Historic Resources
Commission for the 2016/17 term.

By a 8:0 vote, Alberta Christy was elected Chairperson for the 2016/17 term.
Chairperson Christy called for nominations for Vice Chairperson. Commissioner
Coolidge nominated Commissioner Schaefer as Vice Chairperson and the nomination
was accepted. Hearing no further nominations, the nominations were closed without
objection.
MOTION: Elect Phillip Schaefer as Vice Chairperson for the Historic Resources
Commission for the 2016/17 term.

COMMISSIONER COMMUNICATION DISCLOSURE (REGARDING AGENDIZED
PROJECTS):
Commissioner Murashie abstained on Agenda Item No. 3 due to a potential conflict of interest
due to the proximity to his residence. Chairperson Christy disclosed she visited the property
noted on Agenda Item No. 3.
2. HISTORIC RESOURCES COMMISSION APPLICATION NO. 2016-07
Legal notice published in the Orange County Reporter on June 24, 2016 and notices
mailed June 23, 2016.

Filed by Kamran & Parvin Malek to remove the Safley House two -car detached garage
and existing evergreen tree from the Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties to allow
for the removal of the tree and the installation of an ADA ramp at 1541 East Fourth Street.
Ms. Soboleske noted staff is requesting that item be continued indefinitely to explore
options to achieve disabled access before coming to the Commission for removal from
the Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties. Parvin Malek, property owner, requested
that item be continued to a date certain, noted she would like to preserve the property and
does not wish to demolish only to remove from designation to install an ADA ramp.
AMENDED MOTION: Continue to October 6, 2016 meeting and have staff meet with
property owner.

REGISTER CATEGORIZATION NO. 2016-01, AND HISTORIC PROPERTY
PRESERVATION AGREEMENT NO. 2016-03
Legal notice published in the Orange County Reporter on June 24, 2016 and notices
mailed June 23, 2016.
Filed by Jamie Nguyen to allow the placement and categorization in the Santa Ana
Register of Historical Properties as Key for the property located at 525 West Santa Clara
Avenue (Dr. Ashmore House) and to execute a Mills Act agreement with the City of
Santa Ana. Staff report presented by Hally Soboleske, Senior Planner. Chairperson
Christy opened the public hearing. Albert Luu, applicant, spoke in support of the
recommended action. There were no additional speakers and the hearing was closed.
MOTION:
1. Adopt a resolution approving Historic Resources Commission Application
No. 2016-01 and Historic Register Categorization No. 2016-01.
2. Recommend that the City Council authorize the City Manager and Clerk of
the Council to execute the attached Mills Act agreement with Jamie Nguyen,
subject to non -substantive changes approved by the City Manager and City
Attorney.

• Thanked staff for the excellent presentation on Historic Districts.
• Congratulated Alberta Christy and Phil Schaefer on their election as Chairperson
and Vice Chairperson.

• Encouraged all to become members of the Santa Ana Historical Preservation
Society by going on-line at www.santaanahistory.com.

HRC MINUTES 4 JULY 7, 2016
• Noted one of the photos from the presentation was taken by Commissioner
Coolidge.
• Suggested two neighborhoods, West Floral Park & Jack Fisher Park, be added to
historic district listings. Commended staff to bringing to Commission and encouraged
neighborhoods to consider the value to properties.
• Encouraged all to attend Thirsty Thursdays held on the 15t Thursday of the month at
Bowers Museum.
Chairperson Christy
• Thanked Commissioners for her re-election as Chairperson.
• Attended the Santa Ana Street Breakfast in downtown noting it was a tremendous
success with over 1,000 attendees and a great way to bring people together.
• Congratulated Mr. Luu and Ms. Nguyen on placing home on register.
• Asked the Malek's to work and meet with staff.
ADJOURNED 5:42 P.M. — The next regular scheduled meeting of the Historic
Resources Commission is scheduled for Thursday, October 6, 2016 at
4:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber, 22 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana,
California.
