I am writing to express my support and encourage you and the City CoTmcil to approve the proposed
Legal Defense Fund for Undocumented Residents facings possible deportation. Many families are living in fear
that their loved ones may be taken away from them at any time. Even those without any criminal record have
been detained by ICE and face deportation. I support the creation of a Legal Defense Fund and encourage the
approval of all five components of the proposal to:
I - Partner with Immigrant Defenders or Other Established Providers of Legal Services
2 - Establish a Joint Powers Authority
3 - Establish a Central Location for Referral of Services
4 - Provide Funding for a Legal Defense Fund
5 - Pursue Vera Institute Support Grant
In addition, I ask the City Council to approve the reallocation of the $65,000 from the City Clerk to
create the Legal Defense Fund. I fully support and encourage the Vera Institute to fiord the City's proposed
grant request and provide matching funds to the City Council allocation to the Legal Defense Fund. I strongly
urge the City Council to approve this item without further delay.
