August 29, 2023

To Whom It May Concern:

Re: Sealed Placement Diagrams

MiTek Industries, Inc. is a manufacturer of metal truss connector plates and provides truss design
software and engineering services. The engineering services provided by MiTek are limited to the
design of individual truss components. The applicability of the design parameters and the proper
incorporation of the components into the overall building design are the responsibility of the building
designer/project engineer.

If the truss design engineer were to seal a truss placement diagram, it is possible that they could
inappropriately be held responsible for ensuring the proper flow of loads through the truss to the
bearing and support structure below the truss and into the foundation. The truss design engineer is not
the building designer and cannot be construed as such since this is completely outside of their scope of
work.

For this reason, IBC 2303.4.2 and ANSI/TPI 1 both address the issue of truss placement diagrams, when
only being used as a guide for truss installation, do not require the seal of the truss design engineer.

For additional information, you can refer to TPI 1-2014 Section 2.3 which is referenced by the
International building code (IBC). If I can be of further assistance please don’t hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

Andrew Johnson, PE
Director of Engineering Services

MiTek Inc.
16023 Swingley Ridge Road
Chesterfield, MO 63017-2052
Telephone 314/434-1200
Fax 314/434-9110
