<br />\.. <br /> <br />SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Minutes of Meeting <br />July 12, 2004 <br /> <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was convened at 6:00 p.m. in the Police Department, 4th Floor <br />STAT TRAC Room, 60 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, California. <br /> <br />ATTENDANCE <br />Councilmembers present: Councilmembers Alberta Christy, Claudia Alvarez. <br /> <br />Staff present: Assistant City Attorney Paula Coleman, Police Chief Paul Walters, <br />Fire Chief Phil Garcia, Fire Marshal Lori Smith, Lt. Phil Archer; Sgt. John Folio, <br />Cpl. Ed Hernandez, and Park Ranger Randy Eldridge. <br /> <br />Public Present: Glen and Julie Stroud, Evangeline Gawronski, Tim <br />Whitacre, and John Kelly and Dave Guccione of TNT Fireworks. <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS <br /> <br />1. <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />\,.., <br /> <br />Approved Minutes of the November 17, 2003 (written approval received <br />from Mayor Pro Tem Brett Franklin) and May 10, 2004 meetings. <br /> <br />2. <br /> <br />FIREWORKS UPDATE <br /> <br />Fire Marshal Smith distributed a five-year summary report of fireworks in <br />the City per Committee Member request. Chief Garcia presented an <br />example of packages that were sold in stores, which consisted of snap <br />caps and party poppers. <br /> <br />Fire Marshal Smith reviewed July 4th activity, Lottery system and fireworks <br />booth history. A total of 78 booths participated this year. Chief Garcia <br />reviewed staffing used during the night and talked about an educational <br />program that could be developed to educate the public on use of illegal <br />fireworks. <br /> <br />Com Link representatives Evangeline Gawronski and Julie Stroud <br />volunteered to get Com Link involved to help reduce the problem. They <br />asked Fire Chief Garcia and Fire Marshal Smith to speak at their July 22, <br />2004 general meeting on the subject. <br /> <br />....... <br /> <br />John Kelly and Dave Guccione spoke about where illegal fireworks are <br />coming from and that it needs to be a statewide concern. <br />
