APPENDIX B
LABORATORY TESTING
B.1 General
The laboratory testing was performed using appropriate American Society for Testing and
Materials (ASTM) standards and Caltrans Test Methods (CTM).
Modified California drive samples, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) drive samples, Shelby
Tube samples, and bulk samples collected during the field exploration were sealed in the
field to reduce moisture loss. The samples of earth materials were then transported to the
laboratory for further examination and testing. Tests were performed on selected samples
as an aid in classifying the earth materials and to evaluate their physical properties.
Laboratory testing for this investigation included:
• Soil Classification: USCS (ASTM D 2487) and Visual Manual (ASTM D 2488);
• Moisture Content (ASTM D 2216) and Dry Unit Weight (ASTM D 2937);
• Atterberg Limits (ASTM D 4318);
• Grain Size Distribution (ASTM D 422) and Percent Passing #200 Sieve (ASTM D 1140);
• Triaxial Compression: Consolidated Undrained (ASTM D 4767);
• One-Dimensional Consolidation (ASTM D 2435);
• Expansion Index (D 4829); and
• Soil Corrosivity:
o pH (CTM 643);
o Water-Soluble Sulfate (ASTM D 516);
o Water-Soluble Chloride (lon-Specific Probe, ASTM D 512);
o Minimum Electrical Resistivity (CTM 643)
• Compaction Test (ASTM D 1557);
• Resistance R-Value (CTM 301)
A summary of laboratory test results is presented in Table B-1. A brief description of the
laboratory testing program and test results is presented below.
B.2 Soil Classification
Soil samples recovered from subsurface explorations were logged and classified in
accordance with Caltrans "Soil and Rock Logging, Classification, and Presentation Manual,
2010". The subsurface soils were visually and manually classified in the field in accordance
with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) following ASTM D 2488; soil classifications
were modified as necessary based on testing in the laboratory in accordance with ASTM D
2487. The details of the soil classification system and boring records showing the
classifications are presented in Appendix A.
GROUP DELTA
