Appendix B - Laboratory Testing
2001 E. Dyer Road
Santa Ana, California
GDC Project No. LA-1248A
Page B-2
B.3 Moisture Content and Dry Unit Weight
The in-situ moisture content of selected bulk, SPT, and Modified California Ring samples
was measured by oven drying in accordance with ASTM D 2216. Selected Modified
California Ring samples were trimmed flush in the brass/steel rings and their wet weight
was measured. After drying, the dry weight of each sample, and volume and weight of the
metal containers were measured. The moisture content and dry density were calculated in
accordance with ASTM D 2216 and D 2937, respectively. Results of these tests are
presented in Table B-1 and included in the boring records in Appendix A.
B.4 Atterberg Limits
Fine-grained fractions of soils were characterized using the Atterberg Limit tests. These
tests include Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit tests to evaluate the Plasticity Index in
accordance with ASTM D 4318. For selected samples where presence of organic material
was observed both airdried and oven dried Liquid Limit tests were performed to determine
whether the samples classified as organic clay or silt (OL, OH) in accordance with ASTM D
2487. None of the samples tested had oven dried liquid limits less than 75% of the air dried
values and therefore did not classify as OL or OH. The results of the Atterberg Limits tests
are included in the boring records in Appendix A, summarized in Table B-1.
B.5 Grain Size Distribution and Percent Passing No. 200 Sieve
Selected soil samples were dried, weighed, and soaked in water until individual soil particles
were separated, and then washed on the No. 200 sieve. The percentage of fines (soil
passing No. 200 sieve) was measured in accordance with ASTM D 1140. The washed
fraction retained on the No. 200 sieve was then screened on a No. 4 sieve, and the fraction
retained on No. 4 was weighed to measure the percentage of gravel. Then, the washed
material retained on No. 200 sieve was shaken through a standard stack of sieves in
accordance with 8STM D 422 to evaluate the grain size distribution. The results of grain
size distribution tests are included in this appendix. The relative proportions (or
percentages) by dry weight of gravel (retained on No. 4 sieve), sand (passing No. 4 sieve
and retained on No. 200 sieve), and fines (passing No. 200 sieve) are included in the boring
records in Appendix A and summarized in Table 8-1.
B.6 Triaxial Compression Test
A Consolidated Undrained Compression Triaxial test was performed on selected clayey
samples in accordance with ASTM D 4767.
k GROUP DELTA
