Vietnamese Alliance Church PV Orie2 Engineering
Santa Ana, CA February 14th, 2024
3

Attachment Considerations:

Where the existing structure has rigid insulation over the roof decking, traditional mechanical attachments
with vertical screws anchoring through the insulation into the decking have proven to be a challenge because
horizontal loading puts the vertical screws in bending. Our team’s solution is to utilize the facet anchor in these
cases, which provide diagonal screws that resolve the horizontal load as tension in these diagonal screws.
However, it should be noted that rigid insulation can be extremely thick in some cases, and there is a limit to
the length of screws that can be obtained which can prohibit the screw from embedding into the roof decking.
The thickness of the rigid insulation should be field verified, and appropriate screw lengths be selected so that
the mechanical attachment can be securely fastened to the roof deck.

6.0 LIMITATIONS

This report is based on information that was provided to Orie2 for this analysis. Orie2 Engineering did not
perform any site visits, testing including but not limited to destructive testing.

The solar module, racking, and connection to the mechanical attachment is not within the scope of evaluation
of this report. The load rating and adherence to the module manufacturer warranty for these components are
under the responsibility of the racking manufacturer. This includes verifying that the module and its
attachments have sufficient load rating to resist the wind forces at the site (including any safety factors applied
in the test loading under UL 1703).

It is our understanding that these projects are not subject to review or approval by the Division of the State
Architect (DSA) or the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). Where this is required,
the final design and engineering of the project will need to take into account any special considerations
required by those agencies.

Sincerely,

Donald R.
