<br />A101 - Accessibility Guidelines:
<br />All equipment, accessories and work shall be performed in accordance with all
<br />Federal, State and local codes with respect to handicap accessibility, and with the
<br />International Code Council and the American National Standards Institute (ICC/ANSI
<br />A117.1) or Americans with Disability Act (ADA). The more restrictive code shall apply.

<br />A-309 - Operable Parts:
<br />A clear floor space that allows a forward or parallel approach by a person using a
<br />wheelchair shall be provided at controls, dispensers, receptacles and other operable
<br />equipment. The clear floor space shall be 30"x48".
<br />
<br />All controls and operating mechanisms shall be operable with one hand and shall not
<br />require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate
<br />controls shall be no more than 5 lbf.

<br />Maximum effort to operate doors shall not exceed 5 pounds for exterior doors and
<br />interior doors such pull or push efforts being applied, at right angles to hinged doors
<br />and at the center plane of sliding or folding doors. Compensating devices or automatic
<br />door operators may be utilized to meet the above standards. When fire doors are
<br />required, the maximum effort to operate the door may be increased not to exceed 15
<br />pounds.
<br />
<br />Exit door hardware shall be of an approved type and tested in accordance with
<br />procedures established by SFM 33.2 and SFM 33.3.
<br />
<br />Provide minimum 10" high smooth surface at door bottoms, either attached panel or
<br />bottom rail except on automatic or sliding doors.
<br />
<br />The minimum space between two hinged or pivoted doors in a series shall be 48" plus
<br />the width of any door swinging into the space. Doors in a series shall swing either in
<br />the same direction or away from the space between the doors.
<br />
<br />Handles, pulls, latches, locks and other operating devices on accessible doors shall
<br />have a shape that is easy to grasp with one hand and does not require tight grasping,
<br />pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate.
<br />
<br />The maximum force for pushing or pulling open a door shall be as follows:
<br />- Exterior hinged doors: reserved
<br />- Interior hinged doors: 5 foot pounds
<br />- Sliding or folding doors: 5 foot pounds
<br />
<br />A-602 - Drinking Fountains and Water Coolers:
<br />Spout outlets shall be no higher than 36" measured from the finished floor.
<br />
<br />Standing person spout outlets shall be between 38" and 43" measured from the
<br />finished floor.
<br />
<br />Spout shall provide a 4" high flow at a max. of 3" from front of fountain and at 30° max.
<br />or 5" from front of fountain and at an angle at 15°, relative to front face.
<br />
<br />Unit controls shall be front mounted or side mounted near the front edge.
<br />
<br />Wall and post mounted cantilevered units shall have a clear knee space between the
<br />bottom of the apron and the floor or ground at least 27" high, 30" wide, and 17" to 19"
<br />deep (refer to diagram).
<br />
<br />A-604 - Water Closets and Toilet Stalls:
<br />The height of water closets shall be 17" to 19" measured to the top of the toilet seat.
<br />Seats shall not be sprung to return to a lifted position.
<br />
<br />Flush controls shall be hand operated or automatic. Controls for flush valves shall be
<br />mounted on the wide side of toilet areas no more than 44" above the floor.
<br />
<br />Toilet paper dispensers that control delivery, or that do not permit continuous flow,
<br />shall not be used.
<br />
<br />Standard toilet stalls with a minimum depth of 56" shall have wall-mounted water
<br />closets. If the depth of a standard toilet stall is increased at least 3", then a
<br />floor-mounted water closet may be used (refer to plans/diagrams).
<br />
<br />In standard stalls, the front partition and at least one side partition shall provide a toe
<br />clearance of at least 9" above the finished floor. If the depth of the stall is greater than
<br />60", then the toe clearance is not required.
<br />
<br />Grab bars and receptacles shall be mounted as indicated in plans /diagrams on
<br />drawings.
<br />
<br />A-606 - Lavatories and Mirrors:
<br />Lavatories shall be mounted with the rim or counter surface no higher than 34" above
<br />the finished floor. Provide a clearance of at least 29" above the finished floor to the
<br />bottom of the apron as indicated on drawings.
<br />
<br />Knee and toe clearances shall be as indicated on drawings.
<br />
<br />Hot water and drain pipes under lavatories shall be insulated or otherwise configured
<br />to protect against contact. There shall be no sharp or abrasive surfaces under
<br />lavatories.
<br />
<br />Faucet controls shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping,
<br />pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate the faucet shall be no
<br />more than 5 foot pounds. Lever-operated, push-type and electronically controlled
<br />mechanisms are acceptable examples of acceptable designs. If self-closing valves are
<br />used, the faucet shall remain open for at least 10 seconds.
<br />
<br />Mirrors shall be mounted with the bottom edge of the reflecting surface no higher than
<br />40" above the finished floor. Mirrors that are intended to be used by both ambulatory
<br />people and wheelchair users must be at least 74" high at their top most edge, such as
<br />might be provided in a single-occupancy toilet room or any toilet room having one
<br />mirror.
<br />
<br />A-609 - Grab Bars:
<br />The nominal diameter or width of the gripping surface or a handrail or grab bar shall
<br />be 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" or the shape shall provide an equivalent gripping surface. If
<br />handrails or grab bars are mounted adjacent to a wall, the space between the wall and
<br />the grab bar shall be 1 1/2".
<br />
<br />The structural strength of grab bars, fasteners, and mounting devices shall meet the
<br />following specifications:
<br />
<br />- Bending stress in a grab bar induced by the maximum bending moment from the
<br />application of 250 lbf shall be less than the allowable stress for the material of the grab
<br />bar.
<br />
<br />- Shear stress induced in a fastener or mounting device from the application of 250 lbf
<br />shall be less than the allowable lateral load of either the fastener or mounting device
<br />or the supporting structure, whichever is the smaller allowable load.
<br />
<br />- Tensile force induced in a fastener by a direct tension force of 250 lbf plus the
<br />maximum moment from the application of 250 lbf shall be less than the allowable
<br />withdrawal load between the fastener and the support structure.
<br />
<br />- Grab bars shall not rotate within their fittings.
<br />
<br />A handrail or grab bar and any wall or other surface adjacent to it shall be free of any
<br />sharp or abrasive elements. Edges shall have a minimum radius of 1/8"
<br />
<br />A-702 - Alarms:
<br />At a minimum, visual signal appliances shall be provided in buildings and facilities in
<br />each of the following areas: Restrooms and any other general usage areas (e.g.,
<br />Meeting Rooms), Hallways, Lobbies and any other area for common use.
<br />
<br />Audible alarms, if provided, shall produce a sound that exceeds the prevailing
<br />equivalent sound level in the room or space by at least 15 decibels or exceeds any
<br />maximum sound level with duration of 60 seconds by 5 decibels, whichever is louder.
<br />Sound levels for alarm signals shall not exceed 120 decibels.
<br />
<br />Visual alarm signals shall be integrated into the building or facility alarm system. If
<br />single station audible alarms are provided, then single station visual alarms shall be
<br />provided. Visual alarm signals shall have the following minimum photometric and
<br />location features:
<br />
<br />- The lamp shall be a xenon strobe type or equivalent.
<br />
<br />- The color shall be clear or nominal white.
<br />
<br />- The maximum pulse duration shall be two tenths of one second with a maximum duty
<br />cycle of 40%. The pulse duration is defined as the time interval between initial and
<br />final points of 10% of maximum signal.
<br />
<br />- The intensity level shall be a minimum of 75 candela.
<br />
<br />- The flash rate shall be a minimum of 1 Hz and a maximum of 3 Hz.
<br />
<br />- The appliance shall be placed 80" above the highest floor level within the space or 6"
<br />below the ceiling, whichever is lower.
<br />
<br />- In general, no place in any room or space required to have a visual signal appliance,
<br />shall be more than 50'-0" from the signal. In large rooms and spaces exceeding
<br />100'-0" across, without obstructions 6'-0" above the finished floor (such as
<br />auditoriums) devices may be placed around the perimeter, spaced at a maximum of
<br />100'-0" apart, in lieu of suspending appliances from the ceiling.
<br />
<br />- No place in common Corridors or Hallways in which visual alarm signaling appliances
<br />are required, shall be more than 50'-0" from the signal.
<br />
<br />A-703 - Signs:
<br />When new signs and identification devices are provided, the new sign and / or
<br />identification devices shall comply with the Building Code.
<br />
<br />Letters and numbers on signs shall have a width-to-height ratio between 3:5 and 1:1
<br />and a stroke width-to-height ratio between 1:5 and 1:10. Characters and numbers on
<br />signs shall be sized according to the viewing distance from which they are to be read.
<br />The minimum height is measured using an upper case 'X'. Lower case characters are
<br />permitted. For signs suspended or projected above the floor, the minimum character
<br />height shall be 3".
<br />
<br />Characters and symbols shall contrast with their background. Either light characters on
<br />a dark background or dark characters on a light background.
<br />
<br />Where raised characters or symbols are used, they shall conform to the following:
<br />
<br /> A.Letters and numbers shall be raised 1/32" and shall be sans serif uppercase
<br />characters and accompanied with Grade 2 Braille.
<br />
<br /> B.Raised characters or symbols shall be at least 5/8" high;
<br />
<br /> C.Pictorial symbol signs (pictograms) shall be accompanied by the equivalent verbal
<br />description placed directly below the pictogram. The border dimensions of the
<br />pictogram shall be a minimum of 6" in height.
<br />
<br />Contracted Grade 2 Braille shall be wherever Braille symbols are specifically required
<br />in other portions of these regulations. Dots shall be 1/10" on centers in each cell with
<br />2/10" space between cells. Dots shall be raised a minimum of 1/40" above the
<br />background.
<br />
<br />All building entrances that are accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities,
<br />and at every major junction along or leading to an accessible route of travel shall be
<br />identified with a sign displaying the International Symbol of Accessibility and with
<br />directional signs, as required, to be visible to persons along approaching pedestrian
<br />ways as per code.
<br />
<br />When permanent identification is provided for rooms and spaces, raised letters shall
<br />be provided and shall be accompanied by Braille in conformance with code. Signs
<br />shall be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. Where there is no
<br />wall space to the latch side of the door, including at double leaf doors, signs shall be
<br />placed on the nearest adjacent wall. Mounting height shall be 60" above the finished
<br />floor to the centerline of the sign. Mounting location shall be determined so that a
<br />person may approach within 3" of signage without encountering protruding objects or
<br />standing within the swing of a door.
