8l-602 JUN 29 <br />PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF THE STRUCTURAL <br />INTEGRITY OF THE BOWERS HUSEUI,I <br />INTROOUCT ION <br />This report is presented under the terms of our agreement with the City of <br />Santa Ana to make a preliminary evaluation of the structural integrity of <br />the Bowers Museum based on criteria of the City of Santa Ana Earthquake <br />ilazard Reduct ion 0rdinance #NS-1518. <br />Our evaluation is based on our examination of accessible portions of the <br />Museum building, and adjoining structures, our review of the existing plans, <br />dated December 28, 1931, and our preliminary calculations based on the <br />requ i rements of the 0rd inance. <br />STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF THE MUSEUM <br />The Museum building is an unreinforced brick bearing wall building on a <br />concrete foundation. lt has a partial second floor constructed of a reinforced <br />conc re te <br />and ove r <br />concrete <br />The patio is enclosed on the north <br />wood posts embedded in 4 feot high <br />supporting a wood framed roof, <br />xcept over the balcony (now office space), <br />is const ructed of reinforced <br />supported on st ructura I steel <br />arbor built of a single line of <br />piers, l2 feet on center and <br />beam and slab system. <br />the south entry room <br />slabs reinforced wi th re mesh and <br />, the roof <br />purlins and trusses, The building is irregular in plan and has a first <br />story area of approximately 6500 square feet, and a second story of <br />approx imate ly 4100 square feet. <br />North of the building and directly adjacent is a concrete building of recent <br />construction. This is structural ly independent of the unreinforced brick <br />building. lt is not under the jurisdiction of the 0rdinance and is not <br />within the scope of this report. <br />East of the building, forming south and east sides of a large patio is an <br />open arcade built of arched unreinforced brick hral ls with a wood plank and <br />beam roof. The south and east wings of the arcade meet at an unreinforced <br />brick bell tower with some reinforced concrete elements built into its <br />structure. The north end of the east wing of the arcade ends at an <br />unreinforced brick open pavilion with r"rcod framed roof, <br />by an <br />br ick <br />At the northeast corner of the building is a wood framed trellis of about <br />1000 square feet and supported at the north on 3 feet square by 13 feet <br />high brick piers and at the south by a 25-inch thick by l4 feet hi9h, <br />unbraced br ick wal l. <br />d#ulieeso a
