An inspection of Bowers liluseum was made by members of the building department and fire <br />department on November 5, l98l . A list of apparent building code violations and potential <br />hazards folIow: <br />l) Lxtensive electrical wiring added with new construction in both the "old'' building and <br />',new,' 1973 addition. No permits, plan check or inspections on this work. This wiring <br />is potenti al 1y hazardous. <br />')l The I973 addi ti on: (GallerY) <br />a) Exit signs not visible, exit doors obscurred by partiitons, No directional exit <br />si gns provi ded. <br />b) Exit path to the southeast exit door pair (6' wide) restricted to a 4' width' <br />c) Partitions arranged in a confusing "maze like" manner with no exit path delineated. <br />d) Storage of display material etc. in exit paths leading to the southv',est exit door. <br />e) Similar to (d) at workshop area to the northwest. <br />f) southwest exit door locked with two (2) double cylinder deadbolts - - took four (4) <br />minutes for an employee to unlock this "system" of double locks. <br />S) In a building of Type I construction partitions are required to be of I hour fire <br />resistive construction; many partitions are constructed of plywood (non fire rated). <br />h) Some partitions not properly anchored, could possibly be pushed over. <br />i) panic hardware and illuminated exit signs are required at the southwest exit door. <br />0ld Bui I di ns <br />4) <br />3) <br />a, <br />5) <br />a) offices have been added on the existing balcony (including wiring etc') without <br />pennits, plan check or inspection. <br />b) Revamp of old ,'Indian iloom" on the first floor not in conformance with fire <br />deparfilent plan review (no plans submitted to building department) only one exit <br />provided - two are required. <br />c) combustible material used on "Indian Room" entry area - flame spread rating <br />unknown. <br />d) Existing exit pathways not I'rel I del ineatedlexit signslacking' <br />e) The existing main entry - exit doors are in need of repair (difficult to open) <br />and most important, swing contrary to exit direction. <br />f) Padlocks used to secure exit doors with panic hardware and "wrought iron" gates <br />at the gift shop and entrance to the gallery. <br />Department records show no permits for new construction since .l974, no electrical <br />permits (with the exception fo outside light standards) since 1975' <br />In addition to the above the museum has not submitted the required plans under the <br />se.ismic ordinance and is now in violation of that ordinance (deadline November 3' l98l).
