October 30,
2025 NEWPORT STRUCTURAL DESIGN – PROJECT NUMBER 2025-1305

Per ASCE 7-16, Table 13.5-1 the booth most closely falls into the category of “other flexible
components – high-deformability elements and attachments”. The High Deformability Rp value was
chosen because these structures are built from panels that have a very high ductility. Fu / Fy = 45
ksi / 24 ksi = 1.875. Additionally, the bolts between panels have a significantly higher shear strength
than the panels themselves, which means that the primary failure mode of the structure would be
shear yielding of the panels, a high-deformation but ductile failure mode.
The following design parameters therefore apply:
Rp = 3.5
Ω0 = 2.5
ap = 2.5
z = 0 (installed at ground level)
fp = (0.4)*(2.5)*(1.019g)*(1 + 0) / (3.5 / 1) = 0.291 (Eqn 13.3-1)
fp.max = 1.6*(1.019g)*(1.0) = 1.63 (Eqn 13.3-2)
fp.min = 0.3*(1.019g)*(1.0) = 0.306 (Eqn 13.3-3)
Therefore, fp = 0.306
Per ASCE 7-16, Table 13.6-1 the duct falls into the category of “Ductwork with joints other than
welding”. The following design parameters therefore apply:
ap = 2.5
R = 6
Ω0 = 2
z = 1 (installed at roof)
fp.duct = [0.4*ap*SDS / (Rp/Ip)]*(1 + 2*(1)) = 0.510g > 0.3*SDS*Ip (Eqn 13.3-3)
Assume that the duct is 18 gauge. Its self weight would be 4.6 lbs/ft. The seismic force on the
would be:
(15 ft)*(4.6 lbs/ft)*(0.510g) = 36 lbs
