Place backfill material in accordance with Section 306-1.3.2 of the Reference Specifications and <br />achieve at least 90% of the maximum density. The top 12 inches of backfill in the building or <br />paved areas shall be compacted to 90% of maximum density. <br />C. Compaction by ponding or flooding will not be permitted. <br />D. Place and compact bedding course on rock and other unyielding bearing surfaces and to fill <br />unauthorized excavations. Shape bedding course to provide continuous support for bells, joints, <br />and barrels of pipes and for joints, fittings, and bodies of conduits. <br />E. Concrete backfill trenches that carry below or pass under footings and that are excavated within <br />18 inches of footings. Place concrete to level of bottom of footings <br />F. Provide 4-inch-thick concrete base slab support for piping or conduit less than 2'-6" below <br />surface of roadways. After installation and testing, completely encase piping or conduit in a <br />minimum of 4 inches of concrete before backfilling or placing roadway base. <br />G. Place and compact initial backfill of satisfactory soil material or base material, free of particles <br />larger than 1 inch, to a height of 12 inches over the utility pipe or conduit. <br />H. 1. Carefully compact material under pipe haunches and bring backfill evenly up on <br />both sides and along the full length of utility piping or conduit to avoid damage or displacement <br />of utility system. <br />3.15 FILL <br />A. Preparation: Scarify and remove vegetation, topsoil, debris, wet, and unsatisfactory soil <br />materials, obstructions, and deleterious materials from ground surface prior to placing fills. <br />1. The scarified ground shall be brought to optimum moisture, mixed as required, and <br />compacted as specified. If the scarified zone is greater than 12 inches in depth, the excess <br />shall be removed and placed in lifts restricted to six inches. <br />2. Plow, scarify, bench, or break up sloped surfaces steeper than 1 vertical to 4 horizontal so <br />fill material will bond with existing material. <br />B. Place and compact fill material in layers to required elevations as follows: <br />1. Under grass and planted areas, use satisfactory soil material. <br />2. Under walks and pavements, use satisfactory soil material. <br />3. Under steps and ramps, use base materials <br />4. Under building slabs, use base materials <br />5. Under footings and foundations, use drainage fill materials. <br />C. Place soil fill on subgrades free of mud, frost, snow, or ice.
