Brighter Futures is a holistic and comprehensive program that provides
Idren and families with education and resources to build their confidence, stay motivated for the future, and break the cycle of
ierty and incarceration. Program activities and components are offered throughout the year on the following schedule:
• One -on -One Mentor Sessions: 3-4 meetings (for a total of 8 hours) per month, for a minimum of 1 year
Mentoring promotes the importance of positive role models who can inspire these children of prisoners.
• AOT carefully selects, screens, trains and matches qualified adults with children of prisoners. Mentors are required to see
their mentees 3 to 4 times per month and provide 8 hours of mentoring per month for a minimum of one year. Mentors
are required to turn in detailed online mentor activity notes every month. This monthly information allows ACT staff to
more fully communicate with the social workers, guardians, schools and youth themselves. Mentees are often matched
with mentors for 2 to 6 years, actually working with them through middle school and high school.
• STEM Workshops: Quarterly
STEM workshops are offered on a quarterly basis to prepare youth to compete in a global market. Most jobs of the
future will require a basic understanding of math and science-10-year employment projections by the US Dept of Labor
show that 3/4 of the 20 fastest growing occupations will require a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas. Science is the
one subject that encompasses everything in life and helps students become curious, ask questions, and make
connections as to why the world exists as it does. Children of prisoners in general tend to have low grades in the various
sciences as well as a lack of interest. With this in mind, our workshops provide fun interactive activities to pique their
curiosities and continued interest inSTEM areas.
• College Is for Me'fooI Summer Camp: Annually in July
College Is For Me Too! is a unique and proven overnight structured summer education camp held at Cal State Fullerton
for our mentees. It is designed so they can experience a college setting and the joy of learning. They get to sleep in
dorms, take campus tours and participate in a variety of workshops.
• Caregiver Seminars: Quarterly
• Holiday Party: Annually in December
• Special AOT Outings: 3-6 per year
EXHIBIT A
