Hope Builders'
Business Applications program recruits 18-28 year old young adults, who are very low income, basic skills deficient,
under/unemployed, impacted by violence, and pregnant and/or parenting. Hope Builders empowers disadvantaged young adults
with the life skills and job training needed to achieve enduring personal and professional success. Hope Builders bridges the gap
between young adults who face a multitude of barriers to employment and employers who need skilled, reliable workers. Hope
Builders believes that learning how to work does not happen while sitting in a classroom, but that training should simulate the
workforce. Therefore, the program models real -world experiences and the employer -employee relationship. Trainees receive a
weekly $100 stipend, childcare and transportation vouchers, and must demonstrate that they are ready to change their lives by:
submitting an application, participating in an interview, passing a drug test, taking a basic skills assessment test, and attending
an orientation. Youth must also possess right-to-work documents and show up every day, on time, drug free, dressed
professionally, and with a good attitude. Throughout 28 months, Hope Builders provides the following four program
components:
• 16 weeks of hard -skills training (Monday to Friday, 8:30-4:00): The Business Applications program trains and prepares youth
for employment as administrative assistants, receptionists and data entry specialists in business settings. Hope Builders co -
enrolls trainees in Santa Ana College's (SAC) Office Management Certificate program. Santa Ana College instructors teach
classes three days per week on -site at Hope Builders and once per week at SAC. Classes include Business Math, Introduction
to Microsoft Office, Business Writing Skills, Office Procedures and Keyboard Skills. Trainees earn 17 units towards
completion of an AA degree program.
• 28 months of Case Management and Life Skills: Upon program enrollment, each trainee is matched with a Support Specialist
who, over a 28-month period, works with youth to address barriers that may prevent them from successfully completing
the program and/or retaining employment. During skillstraining,
• Support Specialists conduct life skills workshops and meet weekly with trainees one-on-one to address social -emotional
issues and monitor their progress. Upon training completion, Support Specialists conduct a follow-up assessment to
develop a plan for a smooth transition to the labor market and/or post -secondary education program, and maintain
monthly contact for up 24 months after training completion or until the client has maintained employment for at least 6
months.
EXHIBIT A
