Santa Ana Unified School Distanct
'f0 Stefanie P. Phillips, Ed.D.
sH00 Superintendent of Schools
April 23, 2018
Megan M. Belmonte
Director of Outreach Programs
Claire Trevor School of the Arts
University of California, Irvine
204 Mesa Arts Building
Irvine, CA 92697-2775
Dear Megan,
On behalf of the Santa Ana Unified School District we are to lend our wholehearted support to UC Irvine
(UCI)'s City of Santa Ana — Investing in the Artist Grant Opportunity —Arts Organizations grant proposal.
As we work toward the development of a conservatory level school of the arts within Santa Ana High
School with a mission of fostering socially conscious artist scholars with the skills to adapt and thrive in an
ever-changing world, our mission is to develop a nationally recognized arts school that provides the
students of Santa Ana with access to conservatory -level, college preparatory high school education.
To achieve this vision and mission, the students of Santa Ana need access to the resources and support
provided by UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts which has already provided a strong web of support for
our music students and arts educators in music, dance, and theatre. We are thrilled to expand this
partnership to increase the opportunities for all students in all arts disciplines, expanding to include visual
and media arts,
The impact of the partnership includes 1.) building students' awareness of the university experience
making it a tangible goal for them; 2.) exposing students to the arts at a college level; 3.) emphasizing the
value of arts education; and 4.) cultivating engaged young artists.
We recognize that our students have the opportunity to fuel the creative economy with one in 10 jobs
being directly connected, and new jobs emerging that are not yet developed, We need to prepare our
students to step into this important pipeline and can only do so through our critical partnerships with
higher education and industry connections. UCI provides our students this opportunity. As an arts equity
district, SAUSD is willing to support equitable access to high quality arts education.
We wholeheartedly support UCI's grant proposal and are excited to continue to work together as we
build new programs, providing meaningful opportunities for our SAHS students.
Jn
for your consideration,
aidfil r
Visual and Performing Arts Specialist
Santa Ana Unified School District
1641 East Chestnut Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92701.6322 (714) 558.5501
BOARD OF EDUCATION
Valerie Amezcua, President , Riga Rodriguez, Ph.)„ Vice President
Alfonso Alvarez, Ed.)„ Clerk • Cecilia "Ced" Iglesias, Member • John Palacio, Member
