Belmonte Director of Outreach Programs Claire Trevor School of the Arts University of California, Irvine 204 Mesa Arts Building Irvine, CA 92597-2775 Dear Megan, On behalf of Santa Ana Unified School District, we are happy to lend our wholehearted support to UC Irvine (UCI)'s City of Santa Ana — Investing in the Artist Grant Opportunity —Arts Organizations grant proposal. The mission of Santa Ana High School is to have students graduate healthy and well -adjusted, academically competitive, and prepared for college and careers. Graduating Saints are enthusiastic life-long learners who will be motivated to problem solve In order to positively contribute to society. Beginning in 2012, the UCI Music Department adopted the Santa Ana High School (SANS) Music Department. The goal of the partnership is youth development, exposing SAHS students to college and career pathways, and using music as the tool. Through music, young people are valued and encouraged to embrace opportunity, thereby serving the mission of Santa Ana High School. The impacts of the partnership Include 1.) building students' awareness of the university experience, making it a tangible goal for them; 2.) exposing students to the arts at a college level; 3.) emphasizing the value of music and music education; and 4.) cultivating engaged young artists. This year, in addition to students learning from UCI Symphony Orchestra Maestro Dr. Stephen Tucker in several master classes, being coached one-on-one by some of UCPs outstanding graduate and undergraduate musicians, experiencing college life on campus at UCI and playing with the UCI Symphony Orchestra In a combined concert, students experienced a dramatic Improvisation workshop to build cohesion in the ensemble, and a group of students joined UCI Music Department Chair Michael Dessen in a collaborative telematic digital music intensive with high school students in Manizales, Colombia. This partnership has equipped our Santa Ana High School musicians and thespians to expand their participation into the broader arts community in Downtown Santa Ana. In return, the arts community has come to Santa Ana High School. These young artists and leaders have become strong ambassadors of goodwill throughout the community. We wholeheartedly support UCI's grant proposal and are excited to continue to work together as we build new programs, providing meaningful opportunities for our SANS students.
