h k aw
April 17, 2018
City of Santa Ana
Community Development Agency
20 Civic Center Plaza, M-25
Santa Ana, 92701
To Whom It May Concern:
On behalf of the Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association and its Board of
Directors, I am writing in support of the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art
(OCCCA) and their City of Santa Ana Investing in the Artists Opportunity grant
application.
Since 2015, the Vietnamese American Arts & Letter Association (VAALA) has partnered
with OCCCA to present art exhibitions to the community and general public, namely the
exhibits, Home, and Generations: 40 Hues Between Black & White.
VAALA first collaborated with OCCCA for the exhibition, Home, which ran from July 5-
26, 2014 concurrently at OCCCA and the VAALA Center. The exhibition aimed to
illuminate and enrich the viewers' understanding of the concept "home" and hosted
works by artists from across the United States. On opening day, exhibition visitors were
able to ride a free shuttle to visit both gallery spaces. In December 2015, with OCCCA
we co -presented Generations: 40 Hues Between Black & White. This exhibition ran
from December 5-19, 2015 at OCCCA. As 2015 marked the 40th Anniversary of the
beginning of the exodus of over a million Vietnamese people to other countries for
political, economic, and other reason following the end of the Vietnam War, featured
artwork was by artists of Vietnamese heritage and artists inspired by Vietnam over the
past 40 years.
Both exhibitions created opportunities for the public to see different perspectives of
artists with different ethnicities and backgrounds. It also created a space for visitors to
understand the Vietnamese American community beyond the scope of the war. OCCCA
offered a beautiful, professional and accessible exhibition space and team members
were both supportive and professional. OCCCA's nation-wide network helped increase
the reach of our call -for -entries and central location in the Santa Ana Artists Village is
very accessible to the public.
1600 N.
