The construction of Disneyland and Interstate 5 caused a
surge in population and land area: citrus groves quickly gave way
to modern development, and the once -thriving downtown was left
empty as economic activity dispersed. The eventual demolition
of downtown and rerouting of the historic street patterns gave
rise to a realization that the remaining resources needed active
protection. The result was a passionate interest among residents
in Anaheim's historic residential stock, which has been strongly
supported by the City through planning efforts and incentive
programs.
ARG has been involved with historic preservation in Anaheim since
1988, assisting the City of Anaheim with the execution of their
downtown redevelopment plan and continuing on -call Historic
Preservation Planning consulting services.
ARG has maintained a productive working relationship with the
Anaheim Planning & Building Department as they manage their
Mills Act Program (the third largest in California), establish and
apply rehabilitation standards, and evaluate historic resources. ARG
has also provided preservation training and resources for City Staff
and the public.
In 2009, ARG led the effort to create a Citywide Historic
Preservation Plan that would allow for the evaluation of historic
resources outside of established historic districts as well as those of
the recent past. Working closely with City Staff and the residents'
Historic Preservation Committee in monthly work sessions, ARG
wrote a citywide context statement, formulated criteria for
designation of buildings and districts, and produced the Historic
Preservation Plan that was adopted by the City Council in 2010.
The California Preservation Foundation recognized ARG's Historic
Preservation Plan with a Preservation Design Award - Cultural
Resource Studies, Reports in 2011.
Since 2019, ARG has collaborated with the City on a series
of Architectural Style Guides, which supplement the Historic
Preservation Plan by providing detailed information and
recommendations specific to the City's most common types of
architecture.
Cily rf_Inulieim
Architectural Style Guide:
Minimal Traditional
PrtPun JJr
XA® 1
Client
City of Anaheim, Community Development Department
Client Reference
Christine Nguyen, LEED AP, Associate Planner, City of Anaheim
CNguyen2@anaheim.net / 714.465.4942
Project Duration
Preservation Plan: 2009 -2010
On -Call Services and Mills Act Consulting: 2009 - On -Going
Architectural Resources Group I Environmental and Planning Services 6
