Each 8-week session will deliver
a comprehensive training in the fundamentals of digital media production, creative storytelling,
and how to develop career pathways in the creative and digital arts. Each class will be two -
hours long, and instruction will focus on how to make high -quality video projects with tablets
and cell phones, which are widely available to the target population, and which provide access
to free or low-cost high quality digital production apps, such as Filmic Pro, Movie Pro, iMovie,
Garage Band, Adobe Spark Video and Final Draft Mobile.
In order to maximize impact and tailor instruction to participants' distinct creative, educational
and professional needs, two of the MILPA courses will be available for youth 13-18 years of age,
and one will be available to participants 19-24 years of age. Each course can accommodate 16-
20 participants. Each class will meet once weekly, be two hours long, and will include live
instruction, question and answers, and an assignment. Additionally, at least three professional
guest speakers will be scheduled for each cohort in order to provide professional training and
career advice.
By mastering the fundamentals of digital media production, participants can create high -
quality, creative and technically -proficient projects. Additionally, the production fundamentals
learned using this accessible equipment (i.e. lighting, sound recording, script writing,
cinematography and editing) will empower participants to transfer these skills directly to
projects involving more expensive cameras, computers and software.
Introducing participants to a world of powerful digital production tools that are literally at their
fingertips, MILPA helps overcome the digital divide that results from lack of access to resources
and technology so critical to success in today's society and workforce.
The MILPA program can be delivered via Zoom as distance learning or in -person, if health
restrictions allow. If in -person instruction is allowed, the class will be held at Grand Central Arts
Center in the Santa Ana Artists' Village. To maximize geographic access, we can hold each 8-
week course at a different location, such as the Delhi Center, Roosevelt -Walker Community
Center or the Garfield Community Center.
In addition to the live instruction, MASA will create sixteen 20-30 minute instructional videos to
be viewed online as part of the training. These will focus on 8 aspects of digital production, and
each aspect will include one video for technical training, and one video focusing on aesthetics
and creative aspects of production. The videos will be uploaded to YouTube, and each pair will
cover instruction related to subject covered in the live class. In this way, participants can view
11
