URBAN PLAZAS <br />Urban plazas are small parks with hardscape <br />and greenspace that provide social gathering <br />opportunities in urban and commercial areas. <br />SITE CHARACTER & ADJACENCIES <br />• Are urban sites, primarily for social gatherings <br />and leisure, typically found in commercial <br />areas or office complexes <br />• Serve the immediate area, including residents, <br />nearby employees, patrons of nearby <br />businesses, and visitors <br />• May be programmed to attract people <br />citywide <br />• Site design should encourage interaction with <br />the surrounding uses. <br />SIZE & CONFIGURATION <br />ACCESS <br />• Accessible by auto, bus, bicycle or foot <br />• May be located on bikeway or bike route <br />• Sidewalks should connect to park paths for <br />walkers <br />• Ideally located on a transit/bus line <br />• Frontage on a collector or arterial street <br />PRIORITIZED RECREATION ELEMENTS <br />• Hardscape plaza <br />• Green landscaped areas <br />• Small amphitheater or small event space with <br />seatwalls <br />• Outdoor work infrastructure, including long <br />tables and chairs, electrical hookups, Wi-Fi, <br />and shade <br />ADDITIONAL RECREATION ELEMENTS TO <br />CONSIDER <br />• Coffee cart (operated by a concessionaire or <br />vendor) <br />• Small water feature, potentially with play/spray/ <br />mist o tions that can be turned on and off <br />Exhibit 1 <br />PRIORITIZED SUPPORT AMENITIES <br />• Facility access paths <br />• Perimeter path or sidewalks <br />• Tables, seating, bike racks, trash receptacles <br />• Shade (trees, shelters, canopies, sails) <br />• Park identification signage near street entry, or <br />visible frontage <br />• Pedestrian -scale lighting <br />• Portable restrooms for events <br />LANDSCAPING & VEGETATION <br />• Medium to high -maintenance plantings, <br />functional landscaping for most of the site <br />• Trees for shade, habitat, and seasonal interest <br />(evergreen and deciduous) <br />• Drought -tolerant landscaping with drip <br />irrigation, in accordance with WELO <br />(California's Water Efficient Landscape <br />Ordinance). <br />• Bioswales for stormwater filtration <br />ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS <br />• Site may include a mix of hardscape, <br />• Typically 0.5 — 3 acres in size, but may be as <br />p <br />• Avoid regional -scale facilities, such as sports <br />greenscape, seating, and small event space to <br />large as 5 acres <br />• Art (integrated or stand-alone) <br />arenas, arboretums, recreation centers <br />support small social gatherings and outdoor <br />.
